The Pittsburgh Steelers escaped with an ugly victory on Sunday as the team was able to take down the New England Patriots for their second win of the 2025 NFL season. Pittsburgh now moves to 2-1 on the year, which is a record that must continue to improve in the coming weeks as the schedule only gets harder. The Steelers were able to take down the Patriots by a score of 21-14, but the organization should have been able to put more points on the board as the defense took the ball away from New England five times.

The Steelers were able to force four fumbles while also picking off Drake Maye once in the Week 3 win. Five turnovers is extremely rare, but the Steelers were able to continuously steal the ball back for their offense. Pittsburgh only scored twice off of turnovers, which is a bit disappointing considering the team really had four opportunities as Brandin Echols' interception came with essentially no time left in the first half. Analyst Dan Orlovsky spoke about the game during an appearance on Get Up on Monday, and he didn't seem too impressed with Pittsburgh's win.
"If you want to bank on all of those turnovers, God Bless you," Orlovsky said.
The turnovers are the only reason the Steelers were able to win the game in New England. Not only did it help get the offense on the field, but it also took away points for the Patriots. Two of their turnovers came inside the five-yard line while they were knocking on the door of the end zone. They could have tied things up at 14 right before halftime, but Echols made a splash play after getting called for a pass interference penalty earlier in the game.

Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin roams the practice field as his team works out during a 2025 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.
Forcing four fumbles is not something that should be expected from a team on a week-to-week basis. It just isn't realistic. Pittsburgh was outplayed in nearly every other area of the game. New England had significantly more first downs while also outgaining Pittsburgh as the Patriots were able to put up 369 total yards while the Steelers put up a measly 203. New England probably wins that game nine times out of 10, but Pittsburgh was just able to make the opportunistic plays on Sunday to seal the victory.
The Steelers need a more reliable offense and the defense needs to consistently get off the field without allowing a slew of first downs. The offense stalled out far too often, while the Patriots were able to stay on the field on a lot of their offense's possession downs. A win is a win in the NFL, but Orlovsky certainly has a point. Five turnovers cannot be relied upon, and some major tweaks need to be made on both sides of the ball in Pittsburgh.
Steelers Need To Clean Things Up All Over The Football Field
Pittsburgh has had an ugly season so far in 2025, but thankfully the team is 2-1 rather than 0-3. Head Coach Mike Tomlin always says it is better to learn through victory than defeat, which is something the Steelers now get the chance to do before their Week 4 matchup overseas against the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are also 2-1, and backup quarterback Carson Wentz will be starting the game for Minnesota. He started their most recent game as they took down the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3, and this could be a big win for Pittsburgh.

Playing against a backup quarterback gives the defense a chance to get back on track, while another game presents another opportunity for the offense to find some consistency and efficiency.
