The Pittsburgh Steelers had a very frustrating offseason early on as many pundits weren’t certain what their quarterback plans would be for the 2025 season. Speculation ran rampant, with fans and analysts alike debating whether the team would commit to a young signal-caller, or bring in a veteran presence to stabilize the offense. That uncertainty finally ended when Aaron Rodgers confirmed he would be joining the Steelers for one season, bringing his legendary career and four-time MVP pedigree to Pittsburgh. The announcement generated excitement, but also skepticism, as many wondered what a 41-year-old Rodgers still had left in the tank.

Through the first four games of the season, Rodgers has completed 68.5% of his passes for 786 yards, throwing eight touchdowns against just three interceptions. Statistically, these numbers suggest he has remained effective, despite his age, showing precision and decision-making that many expected might be in decline. Yet the analytics tell a different story. Pro Football Focus recently graded Rodgers with a 50.4 offensive score, ranking him as the lowest-graded quarterback in the league. This contrast between traditional statistics and advanced metrics has fueled debate, with some fans questioning whether Rodgers can truly carry the Steelers’ offense at this stage of his career.

Colin Cowherd, who has a history of controversial takes that have frustrated Steelers fans, added another twist to the conversation on Wednesday. On his show The Herd, Cowherd defended Rodgers’ performance, arguing that the numbers did not tell the full story and that the veteran quarterback’s impact on the field went beyond PFF grades.
"Not to be obnoxious to PFF, but I am gonna go with no, he’s not the worst," Cowherd said while speaking on his show. "And he may win the division because currently in the AFC North, the starters are Jake Browning, Dillon Gabriel, and Cooper Rush. [Laughs] he may win the division."
He highlighted Rodgers’ leadership, poise in critical situations, and ability to extend plays, qualities that do not always show up in analytics. His defense of Rodgers sparked renewed discussion across social media, with fans and pundits weighing the gap between stats, analytics, and real-world impact.

Rodgers is third in the NFL with eight passing touchdowns, yet PFF graded him 46th out of 51 quarterbacks. Cowherd has criticized the grading system, pointing out that it makes little sense given that Rodgers is putting up efficient numbers and the Steelers are 3-1.
"He is the lowest-rated quarterback because in the PFF grading, he has the fewest air yards per attempt," Cowherd said. "He’s just not taking big swings down the field. He only has three total big-time throws all season… My take is he is new here and they have a good enough defense to win."
Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Is Extremely Efficient So Far
The Steelers did not sign Rodgers to get his fifth MVP. They brought him in because they trusted his veteran presence and everything he has experienced in the NFL to make him the right leader for this seasoned team in 2025.

In fact, Rodgers has looked better than many expected. The grading makes little sense, especially when you consider the quarterbacks ranked ahead of him.
