It is obvious to fans that the Pittsburgh Steelers need some sort of help. The offense and defense have very rarely clicked at the same time, and there appears to be some level of disconnect between the players themselves, as well as the coaches on both sides of the ball in multiple areas. Their Week 10 loss was the worst offensive performance that the team has had so far in 2025, and that unit has been on a downswing ever since it put up 31 points all the way back in Week 7.

The Steelers could definitely use the help of a consultant, even if that goes against what they have always done in the past. In the end, changes need to be made, and Head Coach Mike Tomlin can't do everything on his own. There is no consistency with Pittsburgh, and it seems like every time they try to fix something, another thing breaks, whether it's related to the previous issue or not.
Luckily, one just now became available. The New York Giants have announced that they fired former Coach of the Year Brian Daboll. His last two seasons in East Rutherford were very rough, but there was a bright spot starting to form with his team. First-round quarterback Jaxson Dart has looked good so far. Even though he has not won many games yet, he clearly has the potential to be their quarterback of the future.

Obviously, Daboll had his issues with the Giants, but developing a quarterback at the NFL level is not easy, especially in the era of the transfer portal and NIL deals. Despite the firing, there is something to be said about how he took a projected project in Dart and turned him into a more-than-capable starter. Even for his faults, the coach was not entirely useless during his tenure.

In fact, Daboll was the Offensive Coordinator of the Buffalo Bills from 2018-2021, where he took another project quarterback in Josh Allen and helped turn him into one of the best quarterbacks in the league. It's safe to say that he knows a thing or two about the most important position in the game, so he could be a great asset to the Steelers in multiple ways.
Yes, the Steelers do have a quarterback with a high football IQ in Aaron Rodgers, but that doesn't mean that they should reject this outside help. Daboll could still offer some assistance in game planning, as he can offer a different perspective on certain aspects of the game. Of course, he wouldn't completely take over schematic duties, but some tidbits here and there wouldn't hurt.
Steelers' 2026 Draft Issue Could Lead To Hiring
For the most part, the draft-eligible quarterbacks in college football have been very underwhelming. Even if there are one or two guys that find a way to standout, the Steelers probably don't have the draft capital needed to move up and steal that guy from likely the New York Jets or Cleveland Browns. There is a realistic chance that they don't even draft a quarterback next year.

Daboll has not exactly had the chance to develop a late round pick, but it could be a good idea to see if his quarterback magic works on Will Howard. There is a non-zero chance that he has to take meaningful snaps at times in 2026, especially if Rodgers doesn't come back and the front office deems no quarterback is worth drafting. If the former Coach of the Year can turn Howard into a quality starter, hiring him is 100% worth it, no matter the cost.
