Steelers Eye Potential Signing Of Super Bowl-Winning Wide Receiver After Suspension Expires

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn't look all that sharp on the offensive side of the ball in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers. The 25-10 loss was arguably the worst of the season for the team and it just so happened that following the NFL's trade deadline, Mike Tomlin's receiving corps was unreliable. General Manager Omar Khan couldn't find a reasonable addition to the unit, so the organization passed on making any sort of acquisition. At this time of the year, there aren't going to be many faces out there that could be signed and make a difference, but there could be one waiting for Khan's phone call.

DK Metcalf is the unquestioned top wide receiver on the Steelers' depth chart, but the lack of consistent play alongside him has allowed defenses to double cover him for the majority of games. This has affected Aaron Rodgers' ability to get the star the ball. Other players need to step up and get open more consistently if the offense wants to be more dynamic week-in and week-out.

A veteran receiver's presence in a locker room can be very impactful for a group that is struggling like the one in Pittsburgh is. It just so happens that a Super Bowl champion and three-time Pro Bowl pass-catcher has had his suspension expire and will be eligible to play competitively in Week 12. If all goes south again for the Steelers on Sunday versus the Cincinnati Bengals, Khan may be ready to bring someone in other than Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Odell Beckham Jr. is not what he once was when it comes to being an absolute stud in the receiving game. He has suffered two torn Anterior Cruciate Ligaments (ACLs) during his career, and has not been able to truly get back into form in recent seasons. He did not play at all in the 2022 campaign, and was used scarcely in 2023 and 2024 with the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins, respectively.

It would be wise for the Steelers to elevate Valdes-Scantling from the practice squad to see what he has left in the tank. This would give the front office some sort of idea as to whether it feels a Beckham signing would, or would not, make sense. An important thing to note is that if Valdes-Scantling is promoted, there will be no wide receivers on the team's practice squad, as Isaiah Hodgins was signed to the New York Giants' active roster on Thursday.

Beckham is a fascinating option that will most certainly want to sign with a contender. He is well past his prime; but if he is healthy, he could provide a little spark and potentially take some of the attention off of Metcalf. The Steelers will likely give Valdes-Scantling an opportunity; however, signing Beckham to the practice squad could be a strategic move by Khan, with the intention of him getting elevated down the stretch.

Steelers Might As Well Kick The Tires On Beckham

Pittsburgh needs all of the help it can get in the receivers' room. It's already evident that the 2026 offseason will once again be one that requires Khan to add to the group, but another strong presence could help in the present day. If Valdes-Scantling is indeed moved to the active roster, there's no doubt that Beckham could have himself a spot to slowly work his way back onto the field.
