The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most consistent and loyal organizations in all of sports, and that is shown throughout the head coaching history within the organization. The Steelers have had just three head coaches since the 1969 season, which is a feat that no other franchise comes close to. Franchises change coaches every couple of seasons nowadays, and Head Coach Mike Tomlin is currently the longest tenured head coach in the NFL ever since Bill Belichick left the New England Patriots and Sean Payton left the New Orleans Saints.

Tomlin has had a great career with the Steelers that began back in 2007. He has brought the franchise to two Super Bowls while winning one of them, and he also holds the feat of never having a losing season throughout his head coaching career. However, things have seemingly gotten stale in Pittsburgh. Many within the fan base have been begging for the organization to move on from the coach for years, but it has always felt like the franchise would never fire him and the two sides would have to mutually agree to part ways.
NFL insider Josina Anderson had a report on Tuesday morning that suggests Tomlin may want out.
"League sources are eyeing five more NFL teams with projected openings at head coach, as of where things stand today, while waiting to collect more data on a sixth team too," Anderson wrote. "Meanwhile, there's is a longtime NFL head coach out there who is considering wanting a change of scenery and has told others of these thoughts. If he acts on those lingering feelings, his departure would clearly add to the list of vacancies."
The term "longtime NFL head coach" could apply to several different coaches, but the turnover at the coaching position in the NFL is so frequent that it is a rather short list when it comes to who this could be about. Tomlin is a clear option as he is the longest tenured coach, as is John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens.

Anderson reported that this coach wanted a change of scenery, and it is hard to believe that could be any coach that already has a franchise quarterback. That seemingly removes a guy like Harbaugh from the list. It also seemingly removes Andy Reid and Sean McDermott. Zac Taylor would also probably never willingly leave the Cincinnati Bengals with Joe Burrow being one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL as well. One name that comes to mind of who this could be is Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers. His quarterback Jordan Love has shown some regression in 2025, and the offense just has not been clicking.
The only other two coaches this could be would be Kevin Stefanski of the Cleveland Browns or Pete Carroll of the Las Vegas Raiders. Stefanski has been a good head coach at times, but he works for an organization that constantly holds itself back. Carroll was just hired during the 2025 offseason, but he has been a head coach since 2010 after also coaching in the 1990s, and it would be completely understandable if he wanted out of Las Vegas.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Could Grant Fans Their Wish
As mentioned, many within the Steelers' fan base have been wanting a coaching change for a while now, and it would be understandable if Tomlin wanted to move on as well. The community has somewhat soured on him as the coach has not won a playoff game in nearly a decade, which is not something that is acceptable in Pittsburgh for the Steelers. No other coach in the league would be able to keep their job after a playoff drought like the one Tomlin is going through. The team is consistently behind the eight ball schematically, and doing the same thing over and over again has not worked. It is time for change in the eyes of many, and Tomlin might decide to bring that about all by himself.
