The Pittsburgh Steelers' longtime head coach, Mike Tomlin, has not won a playoff game since the 2016 season. Despite that, he has never had a losing season in all 19 years of his NFL career, a remarkable accomplishment in a league as hyper-competitive as football. Yet, the playoff drought carries a heavier weight. In recent weeks, there’s been growing speculation about Tomlin’s future, including rumors of a potential mutual parting of ways. While the Steelers rarely fire coaches, it’s possible Tomlin could be considering a change of scenery, with opportunities in television or other ventures also on the table.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin looks on in a Wild Card matchup against the Ravens in 2025.

The Steelers’ recent 26-24 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night has, at least temporarily, quieted the chatter surrounding Tomlin’s tenure. The win secured the AFC North title and reminded fans why Tomlin has remained a respected figure despite postseason frustrations. The victory highlighted the team’s resilience and the continued relevance of a coach who has consistently guided the Steelers to non-losing seasons, even if the elusive playoff success has remained just out of reach.

After the game, Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth spoke candidly to the media about his head coach. His comments were both honest and revealing, offering insight into Tomlin’s leadership and the bond he maintains with his players. Freiermuth’s statement underscored the respect and trust within the locker room, and it highlighted that while questions about Tomlin’s future persist, his impact on the team extends far beyond wins and losses.

"First one in five years man it's awesome, all the ups and downs, me personally being in this organization, but this team in general," Freiermuth said about winning the AFC North title. "Being able to get this for Coach T, the organization. This is just awesome."

Freiermuth has long been a vocal supporter of his head coach, consistently defending Tomlin whenever the media suggests he should be fired or that his time has passed. In fact, many Steelers players, including stars like Cam Heyward and TJ Watt, have expressed similar sentiments, highlighting the respect and admiration they have for Tomlin.

After Freiermuth made a particularly striking statement about his head coach, a reporter pushed back and asked him to clarify exactly what he meant.

"You guys know what I meant by that," Freiermuth said. "A lot of talk. Man, I mean, Coach T is the best coach I have ever played for. I think a lot of people in this locker room feel the same way. He's a one-of-one. We would not be here without him. He instills the belief and confidence in us. I am just super grateful to be here with him."

Steelers Set To Host The Houston Texans At Home In Wild Card Matchup

As for the noise surrounding Tomlin and his future, Steelers fans are unlikely to be fully satisfied unless he secures at least one playoff win. The team will now host the Houston Texans at home on Monday, and if the Steelers can survive the Wild Card matchup, Tomlin can breathe an even greater sigh of relief.

However, regardless of what happens, it appears that both Tomlin and the Steelers are open to a mutual parting of ways if things go awry, though no one truly knows how serious those insider reports really are.
