The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to have one of the more intriguing offseason periods in recent memory. Not only does the team have to officially replace Mike Tomlin, but with a new head coach also comes a fresh coaching staff and most likely an adjusted roster. The 2026 NFL Draft will take place in the Steel City and General Manager Omar Khan and Team Owner Art Rooney II are expected to have over 10 selections to work with. That will be a good opportunity to change up personnel, but free agency comes first and that will be a time for the front office to potentially get very aggressive.

The Steelers have drafted relatively well in recent years, really working to beef up the trenches and create stability on both the offensive and defensive lines. There is still some work to be done, but it's hard to argue that the two units haven't gotten better during Khan's tenure, as he was promoted to be the leader back in May of 2022 following Kevin Colbert's retirement.
Not too long after Khan became the general manager, Pittsburgh hired Andy Weidl away from the Philadelphia Eagles to be the assistant general manager. Khan is viewed as someone who closely follows the financials and trade markets, while Weidl has one of the best eyes for talent across the National Football League. Unfortunately, the lone vacant general manager position has yet to be filled, and the Atlanta Falcons are making a play for Weidl, according to Mark Kaboly.

The Falcons are being very tedious when it comes to whoever is going to run their front office. After recently hiring Matt Ryan to be the President of Football, Atlanta seems to be focusing on emerging talent for its vacancy in the general manager department. It's getting a little late in the game, so a hire could come soon, and a request to interview Weidl means that Ryan and co. are very serious about the possibility of bringing the Steelers' executive in.

Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl speaks to the media during one of his first press conferences as a member of the organization after coming over from the Philadelphia Eagles.
It would be a big blow to Pittsburgh if Weidl departs. He was a part of building a championship roster in Philadelphia, but hasn't had the opportunity to even celebrate a playoff win since being in the Steel City. The Falcons have a young core of players and are in, arguably, the league's easiest division. Despite not having a first-round pick in 2026 (after trading it to the Los Angeles Rams), Weidl may see it as a golden opportunity.
If Weidl were to depart, the Steelers Director of Pro Scouting, Sheldon White, is a good place to start when it comes to his possible replacement. Back in January of 2025, the Las Vegas Raiders requested to interview White to be their general manager, so the executive is thought about highly around the league, and could easily be promoted to take over for Weidl if he does indeed land a job with the Falcons in the coming weeks.

Steelers Would Be At A Disadvantage If Wield Left For The Falcons
White is a well-respected member of Pittsburgh's front office staff, but Weidl is known as a genius when it comes to talent evaluation. He proved that when he was with the Eagles, and the Steelers are finally starting to see some young players emerge. There is momentum when it comes to building the roster in the Steel City, but Khan will soon lose his partner-in-crime if Atlanta decides that Weidl is the right guy for the job.
Do you think that the Steelers will be losing an important piece of the organization's front office if Weidl leaves? Let us know in the comments below!
