Steelers Can Instantly Pounce On Delicate Situation In The AFC East To Fix Team's Biggest Problem

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going through a ton of change to kick off the 2026 offseason. Mike Tomlin stepping down means nearly an all-new coaching staff is going to be brought in to run the franchise, which is something many within the fan base has been asking for for a few years now. It is finally happening, and all eyes are on the organization's first coaching search in nearly 20 years. Building a strong coaching staff is important, but this is also going to be a critical offseason when it comes to the roster. The roster clearly wasn't good enough the last few seasons, and that needs to change.

The best way to build a great roster is to draft well consistently, and Pittsburgh has done a good job of that in recent years. However, the organization is still recovering from Kevin Colbert's last stretch of years as the organization's general manager, and those drafts did not go well. Current general manager, Omar Khan has done a good job of being aggressive and bringing in talent, but there are some areas that need to be fixed. One of the main weaknesses for Pittsburgh has been wide receiver, and it seems like an opportunity might present itself with the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills recently fired Head Coach Sean McDermott, and it seems to be a messy breakup. General Manager Brandon Beane and Owner Terry Pegula spoke to the media on Wednesday, and the two were asked about wide receiver Keon Coleman, whom the organization drafted with the first pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Pegula chimed in with some strange comments about Coleman.

"Can I interrupt? I'll address the Keon situation," Pegula said. "The coaching staff pushed to draft Keon. I'm not saying Brandon wouldn't have drafted him, but he wasn't his next choice. That was Brandon being a team player and taking advice of his coaching staff, who felt strongly about the player. He's taken heat over it and not said a word about it. But I'm here to tell you the true story."

This comment was likely made by Pegula due to the fact that the owner was getting crucified for firing McDermott, but then giving Beane an extension and a raise on the same day. The roster has not been great in Buffalo, which typically falls on the shoulders of a general manager. However, Pegula wanted to point out that it was not Beane who wanted Coleman, which is a completely bizarre situation.

Coleman has not had a great career through two seasons in Buffalo, and he has even been a healthy scratch for some games. The Bills have been in a similar spot to the Steelers when it comes to the wide receiver position in recent years, and Coleman has not done enough to justify his position as the 33rd overall pick.

This is an odd comment to hear from a team official about a player that is still on the roster. It doesn't seem like Coleman will be around for much longer in Buffalo, and Pittsburgh should do its due diligence and attempt to make a trade.

Steelers Could Probably Land Keon Coleman For A Steal

Coleman has two years left on his rookie contract, and after being publicly bashed by his franchise, he should be dealt for cheap. Buffalo can't demand too much for his services after those comments. Pittsburgh is expected to have seven Day 3 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, and should only take a couple of those to bring Coleman into the fold. There is even a chance it would take just one pick, depending on what the young wide receiver's market looks like.
