The Pittsburgh Steelers' tradition under Mike Tomlin was typically always in good hands. However, as the Steelers’ playoff win drought persisted, questions about the "Steeler Way" started to surface. Fans and analysts alike began to wonder if the team’s identity, once so respected and feared across the league, was starting to fade. Still, these concerns never seemed to impact Tomlin’s ability to attract talented players in free agency.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin roams the practice field as his team works out during a 2025 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

He had a reputation around the NFL that made elite athletes eager to play for him. That was one of Tomlin’s biggest advantages: he was widely respected and highly regarded, which allowed him to sign high-profile players, sometimes even stars like Aaron Rodgers, who wanted to be part of his program.

Now, the Steelers are entering a new era with Mike McCarthy at the helm. Change can always bring uncertainty, and naturally, questions about whether the 'Steeler Way' would continue arose. However, the organization’s legacy and how it is perceived by players across the league has not diminished, as evidenced by comments made by Jaquan Brisker during his introductory press conference on Monday. Brisker, one of the team’s most talked-about new additions, revealed that Pittsburgh was exactly where he wanted to be. His excitement to join the team shows that, even with a new head coach, the Steelers remain a destination that players aspire to join.

"To be honest, Joey [Porter Jr.] was kind of on the phone call a little bit also," Brisker said while speaking to several members of the Pittsburgh media on Monday. "He was on FaceTime, and he was blowing up my agent. He was blowing me up like, 'What are you going to do?' I was like, 'Bro, I am probably going to be a Steeler.' And once it became official, I was like, 'Ah, I’m a Steeler, baby.' So I was turnt. It was amazing for sure."

Brisker played college football at Penn State with Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who played a significant role in bringing him to the Steel City.

Brisker’s words signal that the Steelers’ reputation, their culture, and the allure of playing in Pittsburgh continue to hold weight. For fans and players alike, the tradition endures, proving that the Steelers Way is bigger than any one coach and that the organization remains a respected, desirable place to play in the NFL.

"Yeah, to be honest, that is what I told my agent," Brisker said about wanting to come to Pittsburgh. "A couple of teams, but I knew Pittsburgh was one of them. I wanted to come back and play here. Obviously, the tradition they have here, I have seen it from afar. I had a lot of teammates come back here and play here, and they say it’s amazing. I always knew that, so it is definitely just a destination I have always wanted to be."

Brisker was clearly excited to be joining the Steelers on a one-year deal worth $5.5 million, a bargain for a versatile safety in his prime. It underscores that the Steelers remain an attractive destination for free agents, even as the team transitions to new leadership.

Steelers' Culture Remains Intact

This suggests that the perceived drop-off from Tomlin to McCarthy may not be as severe as some feared. While Tomlin’s tenure was defined by consistency, discipline, and an ability to attract top talent, the foundation he built appears strong enough to carry the team forward.
