The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the midst of the 2026 offseason as the organization has made several impactful moves during free agency already, including a great trade to acquire star wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts. The franchise has addressed several needs while also adding some impressive depth, and the roster looks to be in better shape than it was at this time during the 2025 offseason. All eyes are still on Aaron Rodgers and the quarterback position, but there are some under the radar issues going on all throughout the roster that will have to be addressed by the time training camp rolls around.

One area to watch in training camp when it comes to potential position battles is the entire left side of the offensive line, while there are some other positions to keep an eye on as well. This includes punt returner after the Steelers lost Calvin Austin III to the New York Giants in free agency. Christian Kuntz' job may also be challenged, as the Steelers currently have Cal Adomitis on the roster as a long snapper too. Beat writer Mike DeFabo was breaking down the current projected depth chart in a recent piece for The Athletic, and he noted a tight position battle at long snapper.

"A sneaky position battle could be at long snapper, with two local products in contention for one job," DeFabo wrote.

Kuntz is a born and raised Yinzer, and he attended Duquesne University where he was an All-American linebacker. He couldn't make it on defense in the NFL, so he pivoted to become a long snapper. He has stuck in Pittsburgh, but his job could be up for grabs under a new coaching staff with a new special teams coordinator.

Kuntz has become a fan favorite over the years. A lot of that has to do with him being a native of Pittsburgh. He has also ingratiated himself into the local media landscape as he is often engaging with several beat writers on social media, going on podcasts, and he even started a show of his own. He has had many of his teammates on as guests, and he is even doing an NFL Draft series special in collaboration with the team ahead of the event in April.

Kuntz will be 32 years old when the 2026 season begins, and it would be his seventh season with the Steelers. Adomitis on the other hand joined Pittsburgh's practice squad during the 2025 season. He went undrafted in 2022 to the Cincinnati Bengals where he spent three seasons as their long snapper. He spent some time with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025, but that did not last. He signed a futures contract, which will allow him to compete with Kuntz during the offseason and in training camp ahead of the 2026 season.

Steelers' Christian Kuntz Should Have All The Leverage In Snapping Battle

Kuntz is a veteran in Pittsburgh as he is preparing for what would be his seventh season with the organization. He has been around the team since the 2020 season, and he is a strong piece of the locker room. The new coaching staff would be making a major mistake to move on from Kuntz, especially if the two players are relatively close when it comes to skill on the field. Kuntz has never had any major issues with snapping, so as long as he keeps doing what he has done, the job should be his. It is also important to note that Kuntz is the one with the experience snapping to kicker Chris Boswell, which could certainly play a role.
