The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering a new era under Head Coach Mike McCarthy. General Manager Omar Khan and McCarthy are fully committed to turning the team into a Super Bowl contender by the 2026 season. While much of the offseason discussion has centered on the quarterback position, attention is increasingly shifting toward the 2026 NFL Draft. For the first time in NFL history, the draft will be hosted in Pittsburgh, running from Thursday, April 23, 2026, through Saturday, April 25, 2026.

It is an exciting time for Steelers fans, who are eager to experience this new era in historic fashion while seeing their city host the league’s premier event. Early speculation suggested that quarterback might be a primary target for Pittsburgh with the 21st overall pick. However, recent analysis indicates that may no longer be the prevailing narrative. Instead, it appears that Khan and McCarthy are considering other positions in the first round, such as guard, safety, or wide receiver.
According to Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo, the team could be preparing to address one of these positions with the 21st pick. This strategy would reflect a focus on strengthening both the offensive and defensive core, providing support for the team’s current stars while planning for long-term success. Fans are already debating which position the Steelers should prioritize, and expectations are running high given the unique opportunity to watch the draft unfold in Pittsburgh.
"I would go receiver, safety, offensive lineman and I only say that because after Olaivavega 'Vega' Loane from Penn State, I don’t know if there is another guard worthy of being taken at 21," Fittipaldo explained. "Two of those guards might be there, [Dillon] Thieneman or Emmanuel McNeil-Warren could be there. I think maybe Jordan Tyson or [Denzel] Boston."
As free agency continues to shape the roster, the anticipation for the draft is building. Pittsburgh supporters hope that the combination of strategic selections and McCarthy’s leadership will mark the beginning of a championship-caliber era. The 2026 draft represents more than just new players; it symbolizes a fresh start and the potential for a team poised to compete at the highest level. For Steelers fans, the excitement of hosting the draft at home adds an extra layer of anticipation for what promises to be a pivotal moment in the franchise’s history.

The Steelers have been busy in free agency, adding cornerback Jamel Dean, running back Rico Dowdle, safety Jaquan Brisker, and another safety in Darnell Savage. The team also made a trade to improve their wide receiver room, landing Michael Pittman Jr. The issue is that the wide receiver room is still thin, which is why Fittipaldo still believes taking a wide receiver early in the draft is certainly a possibility.
He mentioned names such as Jordan Tyson and Denzel Boston, both exciting options for Pittsburgh who could quickly ease concerns about the depth at that position. Pittman and DK Metcalf are expected to be the trusted stars of the room, but beyond them, the team could use more talent.
Steelers Still Looking At Safety In Round 1
Dillon Thieneman is another name that Fittipaldo highlighted as one that has turned heads. After the Steelers signed Brisker in free agency, many assumed that safety might no longer be a priority. However, the Steelers are being linked to Thieneman quite a bit. He is a safety who can also thrive as a cornerback, which could make him an attractive option for Pittsburgh at 21. Many analysts believe fans should keep a close eye on him.

At this point, the three top positions for the Steelers at the 21st pick appear to be wide receiver, safety, and guard. The team’s moves in free agency have addressed some needs, but the draft will provide a chance to fill critical gaps and strengthen the roster for the 2026 season. With multiple intriguing options available, Pittsburgh has the opportunity to make a selection that could have an immediate impact on the field while also shaping the team’s future.
