The Pittsburgh Steelers fan base and the football world were shocked as a whole when they found out that Mike Tomlin would be stepping down as head coach. After never having a losing season in nearly two decades, Tomlin decided at the age of 53 that he had seen enough. The unexpected decision marked the end of one of the most consistent coaching tenures in modern NFL history.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin roams the practice field as his team works out during a 2025 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

In the immediate aftermath, speculation began to swirl about what Tomlin’s next move might be. It is no secret that he would be a home run hire for any television network able to sign him, given his charisma, insight, and commanding presence. The long-standing belief has been that Tomlin could follow a similar path to Bill Cowher by transitioning into a television role after his coaching career.

Many believe he would thrive on television, though his plans have remained largely under wraps until now. On Tuesday afternoon, news broke regarding Tomlin’s next steps, according to Front Office Sports, finally offering some clarity on what the future may hold for the longtime Steelers leader.

"EXCLUSIVE: Mike Tomlin is gearing up for a post-coaching career in sports media. The ex-Steelers coach has signed with sports media agents Sandy Montag and Alex Flanagan, sources tell FOS," Front Office Sports revealed on their social media account.

Sandy Montag and former sportscaster Alex Flanagan are expected to lead the effort to secure Tomlin a television deal as he explores the next phase of his career. After stepping away at 53, Tomlin has since turned 54 and appears ready to test the waters in broadcasting. It increasingly looks like a move to television is on the horizon, potentially as soon as the 2026 season. Much will depend on how negotiations unfold, as Montag and Flanagan work with networks that are expected to compete aggressively for Tomlin’s services.

Beyond his knowledge of the game, Tomlin’s authenticity and leadership style are what truly set him apart. Much like Cowher before him, he has the potential to seamlessly transition from the sidelines to the studio. With networks likely lining up for his services, it feels less like a question of if, and more of a matter of when Tomlin becomes one of the most recognizable and respected figures in sports media.
