Pittsburgh Steelers players packed into the building at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Tuesday as they reported for the first day of voluntary workouts, marking the start of Phase One of the NFL’s offseason program. It is an exciting time across the sports world, with football slowly inching closer to its return. For Steelers fans, though, the 2026 season is shaping up to feel especially different, with Mike McCarthy now at the helm and setting the tone for a new era in Pittsburgh.

However, it is not just McCarthy who is looking to make a strong first impression. New Steelers safety Jaquan Brisker has already generated buzz after essentially taking a pay cut to join Pittsburgh. The former Penn State Nittany Lions standout signed a one-year, $5.5 million prove-it deal, prioritizing the opportunity to play in his home state over maximizing his earnings. In doing so, the Steelers may have landed one of the better value signings of the offseason, adding a player many view as a highly promising starting-caliber safety.

"Everyone is meeting the new coaches, and we are all on the same playing field there," Brisker said. "You want to give your best first impression and just showing up and being there and getting the communication, getting the scheme down, just getting familiar with the building, the players, the coaches, things like that is really important."

With a lot of new faces not just on the roster but also on the coaching staff, the 2026 NFL season has Steelers fans feeling a mix of uncertainty and optimism about what lies ahead. "Just walking in the Pittsburgh Steelers facility and being able to have another opportunity to play football, go to meetings and things like that is just a blessing," Brisker said. "The tradition of just walking where the legends have been and every Hall of Famer, you just feel it when you walk in. When you walk past those six Super Bowl trophies, like Coach (McCarthy) said earlier, it just gives you the chills. It's amazing just coming in to work on the first day and being able to get this thing started."

Speaking after his first experience inside the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, Brisker made it clear that this opportunity carries weight for him beyond just football, hinting at a deeper connection to the city that could quickly make him a fan favorite.
