Steelers Go Against NFL Consensus On Elite Offensive Prospect Makai Lemon

The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a familiar position heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, trusting their internal evaluations over the noise coming from the rest of the league. While consensus boards and national analysts often shape expectations, Pittsburgh has never been afraid to go against the grain if it means landing a player it truly believes in. That approach has defined the organization for years and continues to shape how it looks at this year’s premiere offensive talent.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan picks up the phone and has a conversation in the team's war room during the 2023 NFL Draft weekend as he speaks with someone on the other line.

The Steelers’ GM Omar Khan and new Head Coach Mike McCarthy have made it clear through both action and philosophy that outside perception carries little weight inside their building. Where other teams may see risk or limitations, Pittsburgh often sees upside, fit, and long term value. It is that mindset that has allowed them to consistently uncover impact players, even when their evaluations differ sharply from the mainstream NFL narrative.

That trend appears to be continuing with their stance on USC top offensive talent Makai Lemon, a prospect generating mixed opinions across the league. According to Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh’s internal view of Lemon is far more confident than what is being portrayed publicly, offering a revealing look into how the organization truly values his potential. Lemon quickly became one of the top prospects to draw criticism after reportedly having rough interviews.

However, Dulac explained to Steelers fans why that carries little to no weight inside the franchise when it comes to its evaluation of Lemon.

"Haha... clever," Dulac said via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "The Steelers don't share the same opinion about Lemon."

Lemon put up impressive numbers during the 2025 season with the Trojans, hauling in 79 receptions for 1,156 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. He proved to be a reliable and explosive option in the passing game, consistently producing against top competition and showing the kind of playmaking ability that translates to the next level.

What also stands out is how he was used beyond just a traditional receiver role. Lemon added two rushing touchdowns on the ground, giving a glimpse into the kind of versatility he could bring to an NFL offense. That wrinkle makes him even more intriguing, especially for teams looking to create mismatches and get the ball into the hands of dynamic playmakers in multiple ways.

Despite that production, much of the conversation around Lemon has shifted toward his interviews and personality, which quickly drew attention during the pre-draft process. However, according to Dulac, the Steelers view that noise as largely overblown, focusing instead on what shows up on tape and how he fits within their system.

Steelers Offense Is Set To Be Much Better In 2026

For many seasons, the Steelers' offense has been their Achilles’ heel. Now, with McCarthy at the helm, there is a clear shift in philosophy, as he has long been known for his offensive mindset. While the team waits to find out what Aaron Rodgers is going to do, they have already made a major move by trading for Michael Pittman Jr. to pair with DK Metcalf.

That alone signals a commitment to upgrading a unit that has lagged behind in recent years. With new Offensive Coordinator Brian Angelichio now in place, there is a renewed sense of structure and creativity that has been missing. The combination of proven talent and fresh leadership has created real excitement and optimism about what this offense can become moving forward. Adding a top offensive prospect like Lemon would only push that momentum further.
