The Pittsburgh Steelers made an eye-opening decision by selecting quarterback Drew Allar out of Penn State with the 76th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The move immediately sparked conversation about the state of the team’s quarterback room. With uncertainty surrounding Aaron Rodgers and whether he will play for Pittsburgh in the 2026 NFL season, questions are already swirling about how this new era under Head Coach Mike McCarthy will begin. McCarthy will need stability at quarterback, but the overall roster foundation appears solid.

Indianapolis, IN -- Pittsburgh Steelers' new QB Drew Allar goes through drills at the NFL Scouting Combine in 2026.
The Steelers have added significant young talent, drafting seven players on offense and bringing in 10 new rookies overall. Combined with a veteran-laden defense, there is a sense that Pittsburgh is trying to balance immediate competitiveness with long-term development. McCarthy also brings a proven track record of winning, which adds to expectations for a quick turnaround.
Still, after drafting a quarterback, attention has naturally shifted to the rest of the quarterback room, particularly Mason Rudolph. His future has become a major talking point, with some speculation even linking him to potential trade discussions. However, Steelers insider Gerry Dulac offers a different perspective on Rudolph’s situation.
"I am not exactly sure what it will do for Mason Rudolph, but I think to have that veteran backup, with Rodgers being 42, I do not see them going into the season with two guys who have never played an NFL game as backups," Dulac explained.
Historically, the Steelers have been reluctant to enter a season with a backup quarterback who lacks NFL starting experience. That philosophy is a major reason they brought Rudolph back in the first place ahead of the 2025 season. While Pittsburgh did draft Will Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the expectation was never for him to immediately become the franchise quarterback. Instead, the goal was to develop him and potentially strike gold on a late-round project.

However, once McCarthy arrived, the excitement around Howard began to grow quickly. Steelers fans started to use video creator to make Howard edits, and they bought into the idea that he could develop into more than just a developmental piece, with some even viewing him as a potential starter down the line. Now, with the addition of Allar, the quarterback room suddenly features two young and intriguing options, adding even more uncertainty to the position.
Steelers Could And Maybe Should Follow Youth Movement At QB
That naturally raises the question of where Rudolph fits into the picture. According to Dulac, Rudolph’s job may actually be safer than some expect. The key factor is his veteran presence. He has starting experience in Pittsburgh, has won games, and understands the system, making him a dependable option in a room filled with youth and potential.
Still, the situation is not without debate. While trade talks around Rudolph could make sense from a roster-building standpoint, especially if Pittsburgh wants to extract value, his reliability may be too important to part with. With Rodgers now 42 and potentially returning at 43, injury risk alone could make a veteran backup essential.

On the other hand, the Steelers could also choose to lean fully into their youth movement with Allar and Howard, allowing competition to naturally sort out the future of the position and potentially develop their next long-term starter in the process. Many Steelers fans would actually love the idea of a youth movement at QB. At worst, it would allow the Steelers to bottom out and possibly be in a better spot to draft their franchise guy. Either way, Pittsburgh’s quarterback future remains one of the most fascinating storylines heading into the 2026 season.
