The Pittsburgh Steelers' offseason started off hectic, as they had to quickly begin searching for a new head coach for the first time in almost 20 years less than 24 hours after their home playoff loss to the Houston Texans. New head coach Mike McCarthy is taking over with his own staff, as well as a lot of new faces in the upcoming 2026 season. The organization made a flurry of free agent signings this offseason, including Sebastian Joseph-Day to bolster their defensive line.

Via 93.7 The Fan, team insider Mark Kaboly mentioned on Tuesday night the impact he thinks the defensive line will have for the team in 2026. He was asked what he felt has been the most overlooked and underrated part of the 2026 team, which is where the defensive line was brought up.

"I think the defensive line's pretty solid," Kaboly said. "I'm a big Sebastian Joseph-Day guy, along with [Cam] Heyward, he's still playing at a high level. [Keeanu] Benton took another step up and [Derrick] Harmon. You got four solid guys right there. And Logan Lee showed some flashes. I'm not asking Logan Lee to have 20 snaps a game, but he could fill in there for 8 to 10 snaps a game as well."

Cam Heyward has been a staple for the defensive line for 15 years in the black and gold since being drafted in 2011 from Ohio State University. The Steelers now welcome in the seven-year veteran in Joseph-Day, alongside some young guys in Keeanu Benton and Derrick Harmon. Harmon will enter his second season with the organization in 2026, with Benton entering year number four. The defense was 26th overall in the league in total defense in 2025, but ranked 13th in rushing defense in the NFL.

Heyward, a seven-time NFL Pro Bowler and 6x All-Pro, will be joined by the massive Joseph-Day, who stands at 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds. Having these two experienced NFL veterans can only help develop Benton and Harmon up front. Kaboly also forgot to mention the likes of second-year player Yahya Black, who contributed heavily in his rookie season last year, and will look to continue to grow with this unit.

Steelers' Defense May Hinder On How The Offense Runs In 2026

The defensive performance overall was underwhelming in the 2025 season. The reason they landed at 26th overall in team defense is mainly attributed to their low-ranking passing defense, which ranked at 29th in the NFL during the campaign. However, the underlying cause of that which should be looked at is on the other side of the ball in the offensive unit.

Even the best of defensive units can get exposed if their offense does not stay on the field for lengthy drives to give the defense a break. This can be said for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the offense struggled mightily in 2025. The offense ranked 25th overall last season with 305.6 yards per game, and it was not hard to notice, especially with the reduced production from wide receiver DK Metcalf. Metcalf had one of his worst seasons thus far in his career, so the offensive production will have to improve in 2026 to help the entire success of the team.

While Metcalf struggled in 2025, 2026 has the chance to be a great rebound year for Metcalf, especially following the trade for Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts, and the team's draft selection of Germie Bernard last month. Bernard has received some high praise since being drafted by the franchise, especially from the very-talented now-retired wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. While the defensive front for the Steelers looks to be strong yet again, an offense that can sustain drives and keep them fresh will be beneficial to an improved overall performance in 2026.
