"Great Quarterback": Steelers Rookie Germie Bernard Holds Nothing Back About His Potential Partner-In-Crime

The Pittsburgh Steelers ended up taking 10 out of their possible 12 selections in the 2026 NFL Draft. While it will be very hard for all of the individuals to make the initial 53-man roster, there is some serious excitement for specific players that could make an impact almost immediately. The organization has avoided taking wide receivers in round one for almost two decades, and that continued when the event was held in the Steel City. However, the team moved up in the second to grab Germie Bernard out of the University of Alabama, who could slot in as a starter right away.

The Steelers' Day 2 picks from the 2026 NFL Draft stand on the stage and get the home crowd pumped up just a day after being selected by the organization.

It would be safe to assume that Bernard's job could be made rather easy in his rookie season if he builds rapport with Aaron Rodgers; that is, if the veteran puts pen to paper and returns for another year in Pittsburgh. The four-time MVP has a long history of potentially not trusting younger wideouts at times, so it will be crucial for the pass-catcher to prove himself early on. This is what he is trying to do at Rookie Minicamp, even though the future Hall of Famer isn't present.

These sessions provided a great opportunity for first-year players to get to know one another and workout in front of the coaching staff. Quarterback Drew Allar, who was a third-round pick, got all of the reps to himself under center. That might be a lot for a young signal-caller to handle; however, it's clear that the Steelers wanted to see what he is capable of.

Bernard was asked about Allar and Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette shared some interesting quotes that show just how much certain individuals are enjoying the quarterback's talents.

"He’s a great quarterback," Bernard said. "I met him at the combine and we were able to throw together a little bit, so I kind of already knew what he was bringing. But you see what he does on the field, so just being able to be with him was a great connection."

In a perfect world, these two rookies would move on to become long-term contributors for the Steelers. It's good to hear that the wide receiver is already expressing a tremendous amount of confidence in Allar. It might be a while before the two form a legitimate connection, especially if Rodgers decides to return, but signs point to a strong relationship beginning.

Steelers quarterback Drew Allar gets ready to unleash a pass as he goes through a drill during 2026 rookie minicamp at the team's facility in Pittsburgh, PA.

There will be plenty of time for Allar and Bernard to get on the same page, but the most important thing for the rookie's young career will be getting on Rodgers' good side early. The veteran likes to get rid of the ball quickly, and if Bernard is in the slot, he could become a favorite target right away. This would not just be great for the wideout, but the offense overall.

Pittsburgh has been searching for a dominant young pass-catcher for a couple of years now, and it would be pretty remarkable if he and Allar end up forming a pretty strong partnership. The team is likely going to have to wait to see something like that; however, Bernard's comments about Allar should make fans excited. The more information that comes out about the rookie passer, the more upside he seems to have in the grand scheme of things.

Steelers Could Have A Sneaky Good 2026 Draft Class

Because of the first-round fiasco that occurred, a lot of fans may have been feeling underwhelmed following Pittsburgh's haul of 10 selections. Time will tell, but the current front office has had several good classes dating back to 2023.

Due to the positions that they play, the most important players out of the 2026 group could very well be Allar and Bernard. It would be considered a home run if the duo, one day, turns into an electric quarterback-wide receiver combination that wins big games.
