The Pittsburgh Steelers have made some nice improvements to their roster in 2026, likely making it the best team they've had in years. They made upgrades to the defense, most notably adding cornerback Jamel Dean in the secondary, and some nice depth pieces that should be able to contribute heavily. With the new coaching staff and some schematic changes, the defense should be much better in 2026. As for the offense, they could have a whole new look with Mike McCarthy implementing his West Coast scheme, giving the Steelers a modern NFL offense.

Though there were nice upgrades on defense, the offense takes the win in the offseason as the biggest improvement on paper. Essentially revamping their biggest weakness in the wide receiver room, adding Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard. Pittman, an already-established threat in the league, will be a very big help to DK Metcalf, drawing some of the attention away. They also added a 1,000-yard rusher in Rico Dowdle, who will be an excellent complement to Jaylen Warren. The offensive line will have some questions, but there are plenty of options to fill some holes, with the additions of Max Iheanachor and Gennings Dunker in the 2026 NFL Draft.
CBS Sports' Bryan DeArdo recently wrote an article naming a reason for optimism for every NFL team. He claims the reason for Steeler Nation to be optimistic in 2026 is the major improvements on offense. It's been a long time since fans have seen the team make this much investment on offense, and hopefully it pays dividends. In 2026, the team could have a respectable offense that won't score just six points in a home playoff game.
"Regardless of Aaron Rodgers' status, Pittsburgh significantly improved its offense, starting with the acquisitions of wideout Michael Pittman Jr. (via a trade with the Colts) and rookie Germie Bernard. The Steelers also beefed up their backfield with Rico Dowdle, who ran for 1,000 yards each of the last two years," DeArdo wrote.
The offensive line should take a big step this season, with another year of spending high draft capital to round it out. Though the starting quarterback is still in question, they have two young players in Will Howard and Drew Allar, whom McCarthy is excited to work with.
"Pittsburgh also added to what should be its best offensive line in years," DeArdo wrote. "After missing out on Makai Lemon, the Steelers pivoted and drafted Max Iheanachor, a freakishly athletic offensive tackle who did not allow a single sack during his final season at Arizona State. New coach Mike McCarthy will start his Steelers tenure with two promising quarterbacks in Will Howard and rookie third-round pick Drew Allar, pending the [Aaron] Rodgers decision."
If Aaron Rodgers doesn't return, the offense will have an obvious weakness at quarterback. Still, the cast around either Howard, Allar, or even Mason Rudolph will be significantly better than years past.

They still likely won't be a legit contender in the AFC, given the lack of experience at the signal-caller position and the old age on defense. However, the offense could still be a respectable threat to the other contending teams.
Steelers Need To Keep Investing In Their Offense
The Steelers are taking a step in the right direction, finally investing money and draft capital in the offense, but they can't stop this season. Next offseason, the plan should stay intact: keep building the offense. For years now, the franchise has had the NFL's most expensive defense, and it's gotten them nowhere. Wide receiver could very well still be a need in 2027, and quarterback more than likely will be as well. There's no such thing as too many wide receivers and they very well could draft one high again in 2027.

The defense has talent they can build on, but the offense has been neglected for far too long. 2027 needs to be an offense-heavy offseason again.
