Steelers QB Drew Allar Sparks Controversy After Latest Workout Footage

The Pittsburgh Steelers made the decision to draft quarterback Drew Allar out of Penn State in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. This decision had a ton of people talking because Allar at one point had many thinking he was the next big thing at quarterback. Then his 2025 college football season did not go as planned and it ended with a season-ending injury. Naturally, all of that combined and Allar’s stock became a major question mark. For new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, he drafted Allar because he liked his potential and believes he can fix him.

In college, McCarthy thinks the system hurt Allar’s development and believes that with time together he can eventually turn him into a potential franchise starter for the Steelers. Naturally, when footage surfaced of the Steelers draftees going through rookie minicamp, Allar’s throwing motion immediately created controversy and debate. Some analysts questioned whether the mechanical inconsistencies that showed up in college were still present, while others argued it was too early to judge him in a new system with coaching adjustments already underway.

Popular quarterback trainer Brad Maendler added to the discussion by offering nuance to concerns that were previously floated about Allar. He acknowledged the mechanical issues but suggested they are not uncommon for young quarterbacks adjusting to new coaching and post-injury recovery. The early feedback from minicamp has only intensified the spotlight on Allar, but within the Steelers organization, there is still a belief that his tools, size, and arm talent give him a developmental path worth investing in.

"The difference in the way Drew threw in high school/college and what we saw in the videos from the Steelers rookie camp is extremely subtle (basically a slight adjustment w/ the front leg and zero change to his upper half or arm path/slot), and most wouldn’t be able to pick up on it," Maendler said. "I disagree that he was early with his external rotation during college."

McCarthy has spent over 18 seasons as a head coach working with quarterbacks, and he also played critical roles in developing Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott, among others.

Maendler is explaining why Allar is in good hands and why this video has created such a stir. Ultimately, the debate around Allar highlights how quickly perception can shift based on limited offseason footage. What some view as concerning mechanical issues, others see as minor, nearly imperceptible adjustments in a long-established throwing motion. That gap in interpretation is exactly what has fueled the conversation.

Steelers Focused On The Bigger Picture At QB

For the Steelers, the bigger picture remains development rather than instant evaluation. With McCarthy’s extensive background working with quarterbacks, the organization is betting on structure, coaching, and time to bring out Allar’s best traits. They are also trying to do the same with Will Howard and Mason Rudolph while they await Rodgers' decision.

The focus is less on what a few clips show and more on what can be built over a full system. As the offseason continues, Allar’s progress will be watched closely, but the real answers will not come from slow-motion breakdowns alone. Training camp, preseason reps, and long-term consistency will ultimately determine whether the Steelers’ investment turns into their next franchise quarterback or just another developmental gamble.
