The Pittsburgh Steelers have made it a point of emphasis to improve the depth of their receiver room in 2026. After 2025 presented a huge issue on that front, Pittsburgh made moves accordingly in the 2026 offseason when they traded for former Indianapolis Colts pass catcher Michael Pittman Jr. and drafted University of Alabama receiver Germie Bernard in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. A glaring issue was remedied by the front office; however, the depth behind the Steelers' top three receivers is still not the greatest. Adding a veteran may be a smart idea before the season.

The Steelers' receiving corps struggled in 2025, and it was even more apparent after DK Metcalf served a two-game suspension late into the season. Pittsburgh had little help to come even close to emulating Metcalf's production, which didn't help the offense. Come 2026, there is much more quality help on the front end, but if Metcalf or Pittman went down, there's little help behind them. The front office added some veteran help late last year, but it didn't do much to help. With many quality veteran wideouts still available, it could be something the Steelers look into.
Pittman took to Instagram to try to recruit one of these veteran free agents; that being former Steelers star JuJu Smith-Schuster. Smith-Schuster had a great run in the Steel City before he battled through some knee and shoulder injuries, but he could be some nice depth to fit in on the roster. KDKA's Cassidy Wood posted the reply by Pittman on X, where some fans are already intrigued by a reunion.

Not only would this be a reunion between the Steelers and Smith-Schuster, but also with him and Pittman. Pittman and Smith-Schuster were teammates at the University of Southern California. Pittman was a true freshman while Smith-Schuster was a junior in 2016. Pittsburgh's need for some veteran leadership and another capable receiver, not to mention his history with the team, could make this something that could intrigue the Steelers brass.

During his five years in Pittsburgh, Smith-Schuster was a one-time Pro Bowler and registered 323 catches for 3,855 yards and 26 touchdowns. He was a valuable target during his time in the Steel City. He was most effective during his tandem with former star receiver Antonio Brown. Entering the league as the youngest player in 2017, Smith-Schuster took the league by storm, having 917 yards and seven touchdowns, even playing with a star like Brown. His ability to be a complementary receiver, block well, and bring energy are traits that made him so valuable. His tenure in Pittsburgh came to an end, though, after the organization was headed in a different direction and he wanted to play with a contender. Smith-Schuster then joined the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith-Schuster had a decent year as a depth piece for the Chiefs in 2025. He put up 33 receptions for 345 yards and a score. While the Steelers don't need another star, he could bring the depth aspect that the team is looking for.
Why Would This Work For The Steelers?
Smith-Schuster still likely brings some production, but his morale boost would be big for the existing talent. His chemistry with Pittman would be great, and he would be a great mentor for a rookie like Bernard. His blocking skills would be great for the run game, and he would be a great option if there were an injury. Not to mention, he would require very little money to sign.
