Steelers May Finally Get To Unleash Their Special Weapon As He's Been "Outstanding" In The 2026 Offseason

The Pittsburgh Steelers were thrilled when they signed punter Cameron Johnston during the 2024 offseason. Pittsburgh gave him a three-year deal worth $9 million, which is a significant investment for a punter and showed just how much confidence the organization had in the veteran at the time. Unfortunately, Johnston only punted twice for the Steelers before suffering a gruesome season-ending injury in 2024. During the 2025 season, Johnston spent time with both the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills.

Now, in the 2026 offseason, Johnston has re-signed with Pittsburgh. His past production speaks for itself. Johnston has built a reputation as one of the league’s better field-flipping punters, consistently booming kicks that should help set the Steelers’ defense up with favorable field position in 2026. That type of punting will be critical in 2026 if the Steelers truly want to turn special teams into a strength under Danny Crossman.

Crossman appears excited about the unit and confident he can turn it into a real weapon for Pittsburgh. Since Johnston suffered that injury in Week 1 of the 2024 season, Steelers fans have remained curious about just how impactful he can be when fully healthy. Johnston has been talked about highly for years and has the production to support that praise. With Corliss Waitman now gone, Johnston is finally set up to give Steelers fans their long-awaited look at his booming leg in Pittsburgh. According to Crossman via the Steelers' YouTube channel, he has been nothing short of outstanding.

"I think he's in a really good place. You know, physically I don't see any aftereffects from the surgery. And mentally, he's gotten better and better every week. So, you know, the last couple of weeks have been outstanding. And hopefully it continues trending in that direction," Crossman said during his time speaking on Tuesday.

With Johnston finally healthy and back in Pittsburgh, the Steelers could be getting one of their most underrated offseason additions without having to look outside the building. While plenty of attention will naturally go toward the quarterback position, offensive changes, and the incoming rookie class, special teams can quietly become one of the biggest difference-makers for this team in 2026.

Field position remains one of the most overlooked factors in football, especially for a team like Pittsburgh that has traditionally leaned on defense to control games. A punter capable of consistently pinning opponents deep can completely alter game flow and give the Steelers an edge in tightly contested matchups. They tried to do it when they drafted Pressley Harvin III in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Of course, that didn't go to plan.

That is exactly what the organization believed it was getting when it originally signed Johnston in 2024. After an unfortunate injury robbed fans of seeing that vision come to life, Pittsburgh now gets a second opportunity. There should be plenty of optimism surrounding what Johnston can bring if he stays healthy throughout the season. His experience, leg strength, and proven production make him a stabilizing presence on a unit looking to become far more reliable under Crossman.

For Steelers fans, this is more than just a punter returning to the roster. It is a chance to finally see whether all the hype surrounding Johnston was justified. If early reports are any indication, Pittsburgh may have found a hidden weapon for the 2026 season.
