The Pittsburgh Steelers running game is expected to take another step forward during the 2026 season. That is largely because Mike McCarthy is now in town, the Steelers’ young offensive line continues to grow together and improve, and Rico Dowdle was signed in free agency. Dowdle rushed for 1,079 yards in 2024 while playing under McCarthy, then followed that up with 1,076 rushing yards and six touchdowns with the Carolina Panthers in 2025. While Dowdle appeared frustrated with his role down the stretch of last season, it was still another productive year overall. Now, the outlook for him in 2026 alongside McCarthy once again is intriguing.

Of course, Pittsburgh also has Jaylen Warren, who will continue trying to establish himself as one of the league’s more reliable backs. The former undrafted free agent has done an excellent job helping keep the offense afloat over the last few seasons, and now he will have another capable backfield option in Dowdle to help share the workload. The two should form a relatively dangerous one-two punch, while second-year running back Kaleb Johnson is also expected to push for opportunities.

Pundits have spent much of the offseason debating how the workload split between Dowdle and Warren could shake out. Well, on Wednesday, Steeler Nation may have gotten a major clue after Steelers running backs coach Ramon Chinyoung appeared to hint at the projected division of labor between Warren and Dowdle.

"When it comes to Jaylen and Rico, Coach McCarthy will define that, but I do know he wants two fresh backs at all times," Ramon Chinyoung said while speaking to the Pittsburgh media. "We will find lots of ways to get them both on the field and ensure they have an ample amount of equal time on the field. It will define itself by scheme and the game plan."

It sounds like McCarthy is going to determine week-to-week based on the game plan what the actual workload between these two backs is going to be. It's gonna be very interesting for Steelers fans to monitor throughout the 2026 season. One thing's for certain, this is the best Steelers running back room heading into a season in quite some time.

Dowdle has continued to prove he can be a capable starting back in this league, and he is clearly hungry for even more. After posting back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, reuniting with his former head coach could end up being exactly what he needed.

Steelers Have An Extremely Motivated Backfield

Dowdle looked frustrated with how things unfolded late in 2025 with the Panthers, and now he has a massive opportunity to remind people exactly what kind of player he is in Pittsburgh. Warren is hungry too, and his versatility should mesh extremely well with Dowdle's physical running style.

The two backs complement each other naturally and should help keep each other fresh all season long. Then there is Johnson, who is determined to bounce back after an inconsistent rookie season in 2025. With the offensive line continuing to mature and improve together, the Steelers' running back room should absolutely become one of the biggest strengths of this offense.

If everything clicks, Pittsburgh could finally field a dominant rushing attack again. Dowdle and Warren are setting up to really help McCarthy's offense in his first year in the Steel City.
