The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into a season of change. There is a brand new head coach who is focused on the offense, which broke a trend of defensive-minded head coaching that had existed for almost 60 years. Pittsburgh's own Mike McCarthy will be in charge of the new era, and will hope to bring an offensive attack with his patented West Coast system. With this fresh change, the slow, unrhythmic offense of 2025 has the chance to become a force. With some key additions through the NFL Draft and free agency, the Black and Gold are primed for a more efficient offense.

One of the main issues of the Steelers' 2025 offense was the lack of capable pass-catchers. Beyond DK Metcalf, the wide receiving corps lacked depth and star power. It was clear that for a new offense to work, the front office needed to improve the positional group.
One of the first big moves the Steelers made in free agency was trading for former Indianapolis Colts receiver Michael Pittman Jr. His skill set complements that of Metcalf, as Pittman is known for his short and intermediate route-running, and Metcalf is a deep threat.
Both receivers are extremely talented, but some are uncertain who the clear number one option will be. Metcalf was the clear-cut guy in 2025, but with Pittman now in the picture, there are some questions revolving around the target share of these two weapons. Steelers insider, Mark Kaboly, shared his take on how these two can spread the wealth and how Metcalf's role is not in jeopardy. He responded to fan-asked questions in his mailbag on X.
"Metcalf is the unquestioned No. 1, but donβt sleep on how good Pittman is and what he brings to this offense. I donβt think the disparity of targets between the two is going to be significant," Kaboly wrote.
Metcalf's role as the number one seems to be safe, but Pittman will definitely bring a huge impact. The two should find success together, especially based on their differences in archetypes.

The real question is: how can the Steelers ensure both of these talented receivers play up to their abilities? The key is McCarthy's offense. This scheme will rely more on the pass than the previous Pittsburgh offenses. That means there's a solid reason to believe that Metcalf and Pittman could find themselves with some high target numbers. While Metcalf will probably see some more, as Kaboly wrote, Pittman has a case to be right up there with him.
No matter what, the pass-heavy offense that the Steelers might have will only benefit these two. With more depth in the picture, and hopefully the utilization of the team's talented tight end room, the offensive side of the ball will not be as stagnant as it was in 2025. While fans will have to wait and see, but there's reason to believe that the Steelers' offense will be much improved through a better roster, scheming, and coaching.
How Will The Steelers Other Receivers Fare?
Beyond Metcalf and Pittman, the Steelers made an effort to improve on their depth at the position, too. Another issue of 2025 was remedied. Pittsburgh traded up in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft to select University of Alabama wideout Germie Bernard.
With a young, versatile receiver in Bernard, the Black and Gold could have a rookie as a key part of the offense, more than likely playing a majority of the time out of the slot. However, McCarthy has made it clear he wants his receivers to line up anywhere and everywhere.

Along with Bernard, the hope is for third-year player Roman Wilson to have an expanded role finally. Between these two, they'll battle for the WR3 spot, but will both be contributors in a scheme that often offers four-receiver sets. Pittsburgh's receivers will thrive under this new system. Expect big years from these pass catchers.
