Whenever former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin decided it was time to walk away, many wondered if he felt he had failed and ultimately believed it was in the organization's best interest for him to step down. While some have questioned what happened behind the scenes, the truth is the Steelers did not want to see Tomlin leave. Team President Art Rooney II was shocked by the decision, but he understood it because of the immense respect he has for Tomlin.

Several weeks after stepping down, Tomlin spoke publicly for the first time about his decision. He explained that players such as TJ Watt, Cam Heyward and Chris Boswell deserved the optimism and excitement that comes with new leadership. It was a remarkably humble perspective from a coach many critics viewed as stubborn. In that moment, Tomlin showed a great deal of self-awareness, although some Steelers fans believe he should have reached that conclusion sooner.

Either way, Tomlin never had a losing season during his 19 years as Pittsburgh's head coach. However, he also failed to win a playoff game after the 2016 season. Now, Heyward is facing the challenge of playing under new leadership for the first time in his NFL career. While speaking with Steelers insider Gerry Dulac, Heyward made an honest admission about what the 2026 season could look like for both himself and the team as he prepares for another year at 37 years old.

"There’s a lot of gas in the tank," Heyward said while speaking to Dulac on Thursday. "I think last year left a bitter taste in our mouth, but then you add guys like Jamel Dean, Jaquan Brisker, Sebastian Joseph-Day — it’s a multitude of that, and then our younger guys continue to grow, which benefits us. Hopefully our older guys are still on the cusp of getting better."

It's not often that a 37-year-old defensive player enters a season surrounded by All-Pro expectations. However, that's exactly the type of resume Heyward continues to build. In this case, he isn't predicting any type of slowing down. In fact, Heyward believes there is plenty more gas in his tank even at this stage in his career.

Many Steelers fans have been predicting Heyward's decline for several seasons. Some believed they were finally seeing it in 2023, but that perception was largely the result of Heyward battling through a significant groin injury. After undergoing surgery following that season, he responded with two elite campaigns in 2024 and 2025.

Steelers' Defense Under Patrick Graham Should Be Lethal In 2026

At this point, Steelers fans feel like they're playing with house money when it comes to a player who continues to age like fine wine. If Heyward can deliver even 75 percent of the production he provided in 2025 and Pittsburgh's younger defenders continue to develop, this unit could be one of the team's biggest strengths.

Combined with the additions Heyward highlighted, including Jamel Dean, Jaquan Brisker and Sebastian Joseph-Day, there are plenty of reasons for optimism surrounding Patrick Graham's defense heading into the 2026 season.

The Steelers' defense has been heavily invested in year after year, but under the previous coaching staff, it often failed to live up to expectations. Now, Graham will have both the backing and the talent necessary to make an immediate impact in his first season coaching in Pittsburgh. It will be very interesting to see what Graham does with the amount of talent at his disposal and whether he can help this defense reach the level many believe it is capable of achieving.
