The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2026 offseason needing to make some upgrades all around. That goes for the entire organization, as the front office had to hire a new head coach in Mike McCarthy. This led to adding plenty of new members to his staff, and acquiring plenty of new talent with veterans and rookies. The Steelers have done a great job in their mini rebuild as they look to win their first playoff game in nearly a decade.

Steelers' Mike McCarthy looks on during voluntary veteran minicamp during the 2026 offseason.
As an offense on paper, Pittsburgh has put together a competitive unit. That includes bringing back future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, returning the majority of their offensive line, replacing Kenneth Gainwell with Rico Dowdle, and most importantly, adding wide receiver help. Alongside DK Metcalf, the Steelers drafted Germie Bernard and acquired Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts.
Taking Bernard in the NFL Draft was a big addition, but arguably the biggest one was trading for Pittman. Deepening that wide receiver room was very important for the team, considering the lack of production from 2025. At 28, Pittman is coming off a season where he hauled in 80 catches for 784 yards and seven touchdowns.
While averaging 9.8 yards a reception doesn't exactly scream improvement, the Colts went through a period of the 2025 season with 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers. His stats from last season need to be taken with a grain of salt and it'll be very interesting to see how he fairs with Rodgers. While Rodgers, is two years younger than Rivers, there's a huge difference in production from the two legends.

Steelers' Michael Pittman Jr. works out during Phase One of voluntary offseason workouts in 2026.
It's no secret to the league that adding Pittman. made the Steelers more dangerous. CBS Sports recently did a story where they picked their favorite NFL trades of the 2026 offseason and the Pittman move made it onto that list, courtesy of the choice from Jordan Dajani.
"It went under the radar, but the Steelers have a new starter out wide -- and they didn't have to give up much for him either," Dajani wrote. "Pittsburgh sent a sixth-round pick to the Colts for wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., plus a seventh-round pick. Adding a new target for Aaron Rodgers was necessary, as DK Metcalf accounted for almost half of the wide receiving corps' yards last season (850 to 866). Pittman caught a career-high seven touchdowns in 2025 and has two 1,000-yard campaigns to his name."
Adding Pittman completely changes the unit. It should take some of the attention away from Metcalf as well, opening more opportunities to move the ball downfield more efficiently. If Pittsburgh wants any chance at winning a playoff game, let alone going on a postseason run, it needs a more consistent offense. This move did just that and is part of the reason why Dajani ranked this move.

Steelers running back Eli Heidenreich on the field during rookie minicamp in 2026.
In addition to it improving the offense, the team brought in a draft pick that was used to draft Eli Heidenreich. CBS Sports considered him one of the more underrated prospects in this draft class that sneakily fell to his hometown team.
"Additionally, that seventh-round pick from the Colts turned into Navy running back Eli Heidenreich at No. 230 overall," Dajani added. "CBS Sports ranked him as a borderline top 100 prospect in this past class, since he was a record-breaking offensive playmaker with intriguing versatility."
It'll be very nice to have a strong receiving core for a change as Pittman helps improve the overall room. It didn't cost very much to acquire and his veteran presence will pair up well with an older Steelers roster, as was adding a young prospect in Heidenreich.
Steelers' Michael Pittman Jr. Trade Ranked One Of CBS Sports Favorites Of 2026 Offseason
There are some high expectations this season from the Steelers. They have one of the highest paid defenses and some new life on offense. Acquiring Pittman is one of the top moves from any team this offseason and hopefully it makes a dramatic impact on the field this fall.
