The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up mandatory minicamp this week, and while there was plenty to be excited about, not everything was left feeling good about. Former Steelers defender and host of The Arthur Moats Experience, Arthur Moats attended alumni day alongside former Steelers linebacker Terence Garvin, and the two got a firsthand look at where this team stands heading into the 2026 season. Moats came away impressed with a lot of what he saw, but one thing stood out that he simply could not look past.

Pittsburgh Steelers' former linebacker Arthur Moats remembers his time during training camp.
During his latest episode, Moats was asked what he felt needed to be cleaned up from what he witnessed at practice. He did not hesitate.
"I didn't like the amount of turnovers the offense had," Moats explained. "If we being real, I wanted [it] to be cleaner. We can have good on good without it being the tips, the overthrows that turn into picks. If the ball hit your hands, catch it, man."
Moats made it clear he was not trying to be critical for the sake of it. He simply holds this organization to a high standard, and what he saw from the offense at minicamp did not meet that standard. He and Garvin both came away feeling genuinely good about the overall direction of this team under new head coach Mike McCarthy. They saw Aaron Rodgers connecting on a deep shot to Roman Wilson that got the crowd going, and Asante Samuel Jr. came away with two interceptions on the defensive side of the ball. The energy and buy-in from the players under the new staff left a strong impression on both former players.
When it came time to be honest however, Moats could not look past what he saw from the offense. He made it clear there is a difference between a defender making a great play and the offense simply beating itself with unforced errors. From what he witnessed, there were too many of the latter. Dropped passes, tipped balls going the wrong way, and overthrows were showing up at a rate that caught his attention as someone who played in that building and understands the standard this organization holds itself to.

Terence Garvin played primarily on special teams for the Steelers, but he was known for being tough and aggressive.
The concern carries real weight heading into training camp. As SteelerNation previously covered, early concerns have already surfaced around Rodgers and his ability to connect with his new receivers, and what Moats witnessed at minicamp only adds to that conversation. Rodgers was not on the same page with DK Metcalf at times during the 2025 season, and now he is tasked with building chemistry with new faces like Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie Germie Bernard in a brand-new offensive system. Turnovers in June are not a reason to panic, but when former players who bled black and gold are watching practice in person and flagging execution issues, it is worth paying close attention.
McCarthy and the offensive staff have time to address it before the pads come on in Latrobe, and with the talent on this roster, there is every reason to believe they will.
Steelers Must Clean Up The Offense Before Training Camp Opens
Moats and Garvin were both clear before signing off that in their eyes, this is a complete team with every piece needed to compete in 2026. The turnovers were the one thing that stood in the way of a perfect grade from two people who know this organization as well as anyone. Six weeks remain before training camp opens in Latrobe, PA, and cleaning up the offense is going to be one of the most important storylines to watch for the 2026 Steelers.

McCarthy has assembled a roster that on paper looks capable of making a deep playoff run, but the margin for error in January is razor thin. Sloppy execution in the regular season can be overcome, but against elite defenses in the postseason, it becomes a different story entirely.
