The Pittsburgh Steelers will be introducing a whole new coaching staff come Week 1. With Mike McCarthy taking over, Pittsburgh finally gets the wholesale change many fans had been asking for. Mike Tomlin served the Steelers fiercely, but the playoff win drought in the Steel City grew louder and louder. Much of his roster remains, with many of the respected veterans returning for at least one more season. McCarthy however, didn't come alone. He made some of his own additions through free agency and the trade market, giving the Steelers some fresh new faces.

McCarthy and General Manager Omar Khan helped land the likes of Rico Dowdle, Sebastian Joseph-Day, and Jaquan Brisker -- all three big additions that should have huge roles on the team. Even with those additions, none may be greater than those made very early in the free-agent period, with the signing of Jamel Dean and the trade for Michael Pittman Jr. Pittman fills a hole on offense that has lingered for two seasons now. Dean will help form one of the best cornerback duos in the NFL with Joey Porter Jr.
While the Steelers were certainly an offseason winner on paper, their new investments still have to perform. It's been a long time since this much talent and star power was added to the roster in one offseason, making some of the team's debuts one of the more anticipated in the NFL. Matt Okada of NFL.com recently wrote an article naming the most highly anticipated debuts of the 16 games in Week 1.
"I'm cheating a little here by picking a player from both sides of the ball for Pittsburgh, but it feels relevant. The Steelers traded a pittance for Pittman, but then signed him to a three-year, $59 million extension to play opposite DK Metcalf and give Aaron Rodgers an abundance of size on the outside," Okada wrote. "They also inked Dean for three years ($36.75 million) after a quietly excellent 2025 that helped make him Gregg Rosenthal's top free-agent cornerback. Neither is a household name, but both are solid contributors whose impact could become quickly evident against Atlanta."
With the Indianapolis Colts, Pittman struggled with inconsistent quarterback play, as the organization had multiple starting QBs in just six years. Now with the Steelers, he will get to play with Aaron Rodgers, who may be at the end of his career, but is a future Hall of Fame QB nonetheless. Rodgers had a severe lack of talent in his first year in Pittsburgh. 2026 will be a true test for him and whether he can still get the ball to his playmakers. Pittman will play a huge role in that.

The Steelers' defense had lots of weaknesses in 2025, but cornerback wasn't necessarily one of them. Thanks to James Pierre's mini breakout season, he and Porter were one of the better cornerback tandems in the NFL. With Pierre now gone to the Minnesota Vikings, Dean will take his place, making it an upgrade by all accounts. Now the Steelers have a rising star and a former Super Bowl champion who still has gas in the tank. Behind them, the Steelers still have Asante Samuel Jr. and 2026 NFL Draft third-round pick Daylen Everette -- not to mention Jalen Ramsey and Brandin Echols (who could both be used in multiple roles).
Steelers Are Preparing For Huge Debuts
The Steelers still have a recent reputation of no playoff wins in nine years and just barely squeaking out winning seasons. However, the debuts they are slated to have are the biggest in years and should leave fans excited.

The team, for once, boasts one of the NFL's best cornerback duos and a respectable wide receiver room, making them a potentially dangerous team in the AFC.
