Steelers Put Will Howard On Critical Clock Before 2027 Draft Window Opens

The Pittsburgh Steelers may like Will Howard, but having confidence in a young quarterback and building around one are very different things. Howard is entering 2026 training camp with a real opportunity, but Christopher Carter believes Pittsburgh’s quarterback room gives him a much smaller window than some might think.

Howard’s situation is fascinating because he is not being treated like a forgotten late-round pick. Mike McCarthy has praised his tools, the Steelers have given him meaningful offseason work, and Howard has a legitimate chance to push Mason Rudolph for the backup job behind Aaron Rodgers. For a 2025 sixth-round pick, this is a real opening.

Pittsburgh’s 2026 NFL Draft changed the stakes. The Steelers used a third-round pick on Drew Allar, giving McCarthy a younger quarterback with more precious draft capital attached to him. Allar is not expected to play right away, but his presence makes Howard’s timeline much tighter.

On Locked On Steelers, Carter explained why Howard cannot afford to waste the reps he gets this summer.

“Will Howard has a very limited window in my opinion to prove that he is he can be the guy,” Carter said.

Howard does not need to win the starting job in 2026. Rodgers has that. He does need to prove he belongs in the organization’s future conversation. Winning the second-string would help. Looking decisive in McCarthy’s offense would help even more. The Steelers have to leave camp believing Howard is more than a nice developmental story.

McCarthy’s role in this evaluation is central. He was hired in part because of his quarterback development background, and training camp will give him the best setting yet to work through Howard’s processing, mechanics, command, and ability to handle pressure. Howard has already talked about how McCarthy teaches the position, with the young signal-aller explaining the coach’s method for developing passers as Pittsburgh tries to build a more stable long-term plan.

The difficulty for Howard is that Pittsburgh is not obligated to wait forever. The Steelers are trying to win now with Rodgers, but they are also trying to identify what comes after him. If Howard does not separate himself soon, the franchise will naturally start looking harder at other options.

Carter made the room’s urgency clear while discussing how quickly the quarterback picture could shift.

“Drew Allar is going to get his chance next year and there could be a first-round draft pick quarterback in the mix,” Carter said.

Pittsburgh did not draft Allar in the third round to ignore him for multiple years. If Howard does not force the Steelers to view him as a serious option, Allar will eventually get a larger share of the developmental focus.

The possible first-round quarterback angle adds another layer. Rodgers is expected to be a short-term answer. Rudolph is a veteran safety net. Howard and Allar are developmental bets. If neither young quarterback makes a convincing jump, the Steelers could be right back in the quarterback market in 2027.

Howard has one advantage. He has been in the building longer than Allar. He has already gone through an NFL season, even without regular-season snaps. He understands the speed of the professional game better than a rookie does. He also has enough physical ability to make the competition real if he processes quickly and protects the football.

The challenge is turning that head start into something obvious. The Steelers cannot build a quarterback plan around hope. Howard has to give McCarthy evidence. He needs clean practices, command in the huddle, better timing with the offense, and enough preseason production to make Pittsburgh comfortable trusting him if Rodgers misses time.

Steelers Need Howard To Force A Decision

Howard’s best path is simple, even if executing it is not. He has to make the Steelers uncomfortable with the idea of moving on from him. He has to make Rudolph feel less necessary. He has to make Allar’s draft status less important for the immediate backup conversation.

If Howard becomes the clear backup, the Steelers gain flexibility. They could explore Rudolph’s trade value. They could let Allar develop slowly. They could enter the season with a younger backup who still has long-term upside.

If Howard stalls, the picture changes fast. Rudolph’s experience becomes harder to discard. Allar’s future becomes more intriguing. Another draft pick becomes easier to justify.

Carter’s warning cuts through the optimism around Howard. Pittsburgh may like him, but time is not unlimited. The Steelers are trying to solve the most important position in football, and Rodgers’ presence only delays the larger decision for so long.

Howard does not have to become Pittsburgh’s future starter in July. He has to prove the Steelers should keep asking the question.

Training camp is his first real chance to do it.
