The Pittsburgh Steelers are a better team on paper than they were heading into training camp before the 2026 season. It is fair to say that both sides of the ball have been upgraded in a meaningful manner, and the coaching change should bring along some optimism. Mike McCarthy brings a refreshed version of the West Coast offense with him to Pittsburgh, and he has already announced that he will be calling the plays during games. This should lead to a different offensive approach, hopefully one that leads to more production and success. If the offense is having a lot of success, it means guys like DK Metcalf are doing their job.

Metcalf is the top wide receiver in Pittsburgh, but it's argued that he was the only true threat in the passing game last season, especially with the way the former coaching staff was deploying tight end Pat Freiermuth. Since Metcalf was the only true threat or option at times, it was fairly easy for opposing defenses to just completely take him out of the game. That will be harder to do in 2026 as he will be lining up next to Michael Pittman Jr., as well as rookie wide receiver Germie Bernard. It should also be expected for Roman Wilson to take a leap.
The upgraded offensive arsenal will make life easier on Metcalf, which means the connection between him and Aaron Rodgers should be even better in 2026. Beat writer Mark Kaboly noticed that the veteran wide receiver seemed to be a bit different when he was addressing the media on Tuesday morning.

This is a good sign from Metcalf. In 2025 there were times during the season where it seemed like he was almost checked out, and it is hard to blame him for that as defenses were able to take him out of games. He would go entire quarters at a time without seeing a target because defenses could devote so many resources towards making sure he was covered.
Now that the Steelers are going to have more talent on the offensive side of the ball, life should be somewhat easier for Metcalf. In 2025 he had six games where he had 35 or fewer yards receiving on the day, which is just not expected from a receiver of his caliber. With defenses now having to focus on Pittman and Bernard, Metcalf should not have as many of those disappointing performances. This will hopefully keep him engaged throughout the year, while also keeping the offense moving in the right direction.

Metcalf has played double-digit games in each season he has been in the league, which is a good sign and shows that he has been fairly durable throughout his career. He did miss two games for Pittsburgh near the end of the 2025 season, although it was not due to injury. He was suspended for the final two games of the regular season after getting into an altercation with a fan that was sitting behind the sideline. This happened during an away game against the Detroit Lions, and it was blown up into a huge story. The referees on the field did not see it happen so no flag was thrown, but the NFL later decided to suspend the wide receiver for two games.

The two games missed by Metcalf were extremely important as the AFC North and a spot in the playoffs were on the line. The Steelers still managed to sneak into the postseason, but Metcalf appeared rusty in his return against the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round.
