The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a highly talented and highly compensated defense for quite some time now. Under the former regime led by Mike Tomlin and Teryl Austin, this defense was often gashed in critical moments and never really felt like it lived up to the hype. Year after year, it was the same old story for this Steelers defense. What was even more confusing was the fact that Tomlin was supposed to be a defensive-minded head coach. However, many Steelers fans would argue that was exactly what the issue was. They believed Tomlin thought he knew what needed to be done defensively and may have handcuffed Austin from fully running his own system.

Well, now with Mike McCarthy in town, that will no longer be the case. McCarthy has given full control of the defense to new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, and that is something Steeler Nation should be excited about. Graham brings a fresh voice and a new vision to a unit that desperately needed a change. After years of seeing the same defensive philosophy, Pittsburgh is hoping this new structure allows its elite talent to finally reach its full potential.
That excitement only grows when considering the Steelers have one of the most feared edge-rushing rooms in the NFL. TJ Watt is looking to remind the league of his elite status, Alex Highsmith is looking to prove he remains a better player than Nick Herbig, and Herbig is looking to shine after earning a massive $100 million extension.
With three dynamic pass rushers capable of impacting the game in different ways, there are plenty of reasons to believe Watt, Highsmith, and Herbig could become a historic edge-rushing group in 2026. While Watt spoke with the media on Tuesday, he provided even more insight into the Steelers' plans for this talented group.
"Very dynamic, very elite group. I think you are going to see us moving all around," Watt said. "I know I say it every year, but I think you are truly going to see us moving all around this year. It's a better problem to have when you have guys who are really capable to affect the game in any area. I think that if we do things that we set out to do in this training camp, we will do things like a well-oiled machine with this three. It'll be special."
His comments revealed that Pittsburgh is not simply planning to line these three up and hope their talent takes over. Instead, the Steelers appear ready to create a more versatile and unpredictable defensive attack, one that allows Watt, Highsmith, and Herbig to move around the formation and attack offenses from multiple angles.

For Graham, this should not be a difficult situation to step into. If he gets this right, it will speak volumes about the previous failures under Tomlin and reveal that there were deeper issues within the defensive philosophy. If Graham comes in and this defense immediately performs better than it did under the previous regime, it would serve as a strong indication that something was critically flawed in Tomlin's approach.
On the other hand, if things get worse, it would give Tomlin more validation for how he handled the defense during his tenure. The reality is that this defense is filled with playmakers. It is a defensive coordinator's dream in terms of resources and talent. Graham will have no excuses, and he understands that.

At the same time, he has a tremendous opportunity in front of him. With this embarrassment of riches on defense, Graham has the chance to ignite Steelers fans and bring back the aggressive, attacking style of football that Pittsburgh has been known for. If he can maximize this talent, he could quickly become one of the biggest reasons for optimism surrounding the Steelers in 2026.
