Steelers Just Made 1 Thing Crystal Clear To Joey Porter Jr With Latest Update

As the Pittsburgh Steelers officially reported to training camp in Latrobe on Tuesday, General Manager Omar Khan met with the media to provide several key roster updates. The very first topic Khan addressed was which players would begin camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. According to Khan, veteran defensive back Jalen Ramsey and Donte Kent were expected to be the only two players sidelined to start camp.

However, just over an hour later, that changed. Reports surfaced that third-year cornerback Joey Porter Jr. would also be placed on the PUP list, catching many by surprise. The timing immediately raised eyebrows, especially considering Khan had just spoken with reporters and made no indication that Porter was dealing with an issue significant enough to keep him off the field. 

Whether the decision came together after Khan's media session or was simply information the team chose not to disclose remains unclear. Since the news broke, speculation has quickly shifted beyond Porter's health. With extension talks ongoing, some fans have questioned whether his absence could be connected to contract negotiations. 

Porter and his representatives have watched the cornerback market explode this offseason, with elite players pushing annual salaries beyond the $30 million mark. While some believe that figure is too steep, others argue the Steelers should have no hesitation in investing in a young, ascending corner who appears to be the franchise's long-term answer at the position.  

At just 26 years old, Porter is entering his prime, and waiting to sign him could ultimately make an extension even more expensive as the market continues to climb. That growing debate received some clarity on Wednesday when longtime Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo addressed Porter's contract situation during his Pittsburgh Post-Gazette chat. 

Fittipaldo revealed that Pittsburgh's approach isn't being influenced by the record-setting deals around the league, offering perhaps the clearest indication yet of how the Steelers plan to handle negotiations with one of their most important young stars.

"I don't think they're moved by what other teams are paying their corners," Fittipaldo wrote. "They have a number in mind they're willing to pay Porter and I don't think they'll stray far from that number."

As for what that number actually is, nobody outside the organization knows. What is clear is that the Steelers still hold significant leverage in negotiations. If the two sides can't reach an agreement before Porter enters free agency, Pittsburgh has the franchise tag at its disposal following the 2026 campaign. 

Porter's camp understands that, but it is also watching the cornerback market explode. With elite corners now pushing and surpassing the $30 million-per-year mark, Porter and his agent have little interest in signing a deal that they believe could leave millions on the table if the market continues climbing.

Steelers Are Not Backing Down With Porter

That's where the disconnect appears to be. The Steelers reportedly view Porter as a cornerstone player and are willing to pay him among the league's highest-paid cornerbacks. However, it doesn't sound like they're willing to make him the highest-paid corner in football, or chase every new contract that resets the market. 

According to Fittipaldo's comments, Pittsburgh has a number in mind and isn't interested in straying far from it, even as other teams continue to hand out record-breaking deals.

None of this necessarily means Porter's placement on the PUP list is contract-related. By all accounts, he is dealing with an injury, and that is likely the reason for the designation. Still, given the timing, it's understandable why some fans have connected the dots. 

Whether the two situations are related or simply an unfortunate coincidence, one thing is certain. The Steelers know Porter is a player they want to build around. The challenge now is finding common ground before time, and the ever-rising cornerback market, makes that task even more difficult.
