Steelers' Zach Frazier Sends Fans A Direct Message Regarding Mike McCarthy

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven't won a playoff game since the 2016 season. Mike Tomlin lost his touch after 19 years of service and resigned following the 2025 campaign. That put the organization in an unfamiliar spot, doing something it hadn't had to do in almost two decades: find a new leader. Rather than going with one of the new, up-and-coming candidates like Chris Shula or Nate Scheelhaase, Mike McCarthy was hired as the next head coach. McCarthy certainly wasn't the popular choice among Steeler Nation, having already been the head coach for a couple of teams, but Omar Khan and Art Rooney II felt as if he was the right guy. 

McCarthy has had great success in the past, winning Super Bowl XLV against the Steelers, but hasn't the big game since. After he was fired by the Green Bay Packers in 2018, he was hired by the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, where he had three straight 12-win seasons, but only one playoff win. Now, he returns to Pittsburgh, where he seeks to revive an organization that once upheld championship standards. 

Not only is McCarthy a championship-winning coach, but he was also born and raised in Pittsburgh, making his return that much sweeter. When he was hired in January, the move wasn't well received by fans or the media, who believed things would be more of the same. After his opening press conference, McCarthy showed his passion for the city of Pittsburgh and what it meant to him to be the franchise's next head coach.

McCarthy is carrying that passion into the field, as after their first training camp practice, center Zach Frazier spoke about McCarthy and his passion for the Steel City. Frazier talked about his head coach's pre-practice speech, getting all of his guys fired up not just for the first training camp practice, but for the season as a whole. 

"You can tell he's from Pittsburgh, and it's pretty cool," Frazier said. "To have someone that grew up here and has so much passion for the city, yeah, and kind of his speech before practice kind of got us all fired up, went on the history of the Steel Mills. Just really embodies what it means to be a guy from Pittsburgh."

The Steelers haven't had a homegrown head coach since Bill Cowher, who was also from the city. McCarthy was a born-and-raised Steeler fan and knows what the logo means to the fan base, as Cowher did. Not only will he bring his passion for football and Pittsburgh, but he is also more modern than Tomlin, having a mind for the offensive side.

McCarthy brings an offensive scheme capable of competing with the NFL's top defenses, rather than shying away as it has in previous years. He is the necessary change the Steelers needed to help them get back on track on offense. With Aaron Rodgers returning for his final season, this might be the last chance the organization has to win before a subtle restructuring occurs when it comes to the roster.

Steelers Finally Have A Serious Offense

McCarthy came in and made some huge investments in the offense, adding Michael Pittman Jr., Rico Dowdle, Germie Bernard and Max Iheanachor. The wide receiving corps will potentially be the most improved area on the roster, and the offensive line could gel really well over time. McCarthy wasted no time making sure he had the pieces he needed on offense, and some could end up being with the Steelers for a very long time. 

The passing attack was embarrassing at times in 2025, with receivers unable to get open, which is why running back Kenneth Gainwell led the team in receptions. Now, with a much better scheme and approach to game plans, guys should be able to get open much more easily, especially against zone coverages, where the defense has a much higher chance to bust a coverage. McCarthy has a chance to really bring the Steelers' logo and its respect back as a hometown hero.
