NFL Hall Of Fame Voter Sees "Very Difficult" Path In For Steelers Longtime Coach Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers face a new era with Mike McCarthy leading the charge. Before him, Steeler Nation experienced 19 seasons of Mike Tomlin-led football. The change is massive for a franchise that had become accustomed to seeing the same head coach on its sideline every fall.

Tomlin’s tenure included a Super Bowl victory, two appearances on football’s biggest stage, and 19 consecutive seasons without a losing record. That consistency made him one of the most respected coaches in the league, even as frustration continued to grow among fans during Pittsburgh’s late stretch of postseason disappointment.

With so much change taking place in Pittsburgh, there is plenty to discuss. Still, the complex legacy Tomlin left behind will continue generating debate for many years to come, especially once his Hall of Fame eligibility becomes a serious conversation.

For Steelers fans who miss Tomlin, he will make his broadcasting debut Thursday during the Hall of Fame Game coverage as part of NBC’s Football Night in America studio team. Mike Sando, a senior NFL writer for The Athletic and a Pro Football Hall of Fame voter, recently appeared on The Dan Patrick Show and revealed some bad news regarding Tomlin’s Hall of Fame case.

"That’ll be interesting," Sando said Tuesday. "I think he’ll be the coaching finalist at some point. Then, it depends really what the format is, who he has to compete against on the final ballot. Will he be able to overcome players? I don’t think so."

Tomlin’s history will give him a legitimate chance to reach the final stage, but Sando’s point is that reaching that room does not guarantee anything. The Hall of Fame has become more complicated for coaches, especially when several worthy former players are competing for limited spots. Tomlin could be viewed as a strong candidate and still be forced to wait because of the process around him.

"We’ve seen that," Sando said. "That’s one of the reasons they created a coach’s lane. But it feels to me like some of this structure and process is in flux. Maybe they’re waiting until after the ceremony to not distract from it, but I feel like they’re going to evolve the committee or the panel or something after what happened last year. That will then determine whether Tomlin does have a chance or not. Right now, I would say it would be very difficult for him. Very difficult."

Sando pointed to Bill Belichick as the clearest recent example of why Tomlin should not assume anything. Belichick is widely viewed as the greatest coach in NFL history, yet he was controversially left out during his first year of eligibility. If six Super Bowl wins were not enough to guarantee immediate induction, the current process can make any coach wait.

Steelers Must Wait On Tomlin’s Canton Future

That does not mean Tomlin has no chance to get to Canton. A Super Bowl ring, 19 consecutive non-losing seasons, and nearly two decades of keeping Pittsburgh competitive have built a case that few coaches can match. The issue is that voters may look at his lack of postseason success over his final nine seasons and decide other candidates deserve the limited spots first.

For now, Tomlin’s next chapter begins on television, while the debate around his Steelers legacy will only become louder. Pittsburgh will always remember the standard he set during his best years, but Sando made it clear that the path from the Steelers sideline to a gold jacket could be far more difficult than many expected.
