The Pittsburgh Steelers practiced on Saturday afternoon in Latrobe, PA. This session, albeit short and lasting not even an hour, came less than 48 hours after their 28-9 preseason opening victory over the Green Bay Packers. Head Coach Mike McCarthy opened up the offense in that game, as three Black and Gold quarterbacks threw the ball for a combined 33 times in the contest. Of those 33 passes, 27 of them were for completions. However, there was a key aspect of the Pittsburgh offense that was absent in the preseason opener.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike McCarthy warms up at Acrisure Stadium ahead of a 2026 preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.

Quarterbacks Will Howard, Mason Rudolph, and Drew Allar each finished with passer ratings over 100 in the contest on Thursday night. However, they did not have the option to throw to veteran wide receivers DK Metcalf or Michael Pittman Jr. as they sat out the game with injuries. While the veteran duo will hopefully be ready for the regular season, neither of them were seen at practice on Saturday.

Following the Saturday practice, McCarthy provided an update to the media on the status of them both. Despite the best out come being the two veteran wideouts being ready to go when Pittsburgh opens the season at home on September 13th against the Atlanta Falcons, the update provided could be detrimental to the chemistry of the wide receiver room.

Team insider Nick Farabaugh posted on his X account following this practice with a short-term update on the status of both of them, and it could start to concern some fans.

"Mike McCarthy says he thinks it will be 'hard-pressed' for DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. to work their way back to practicing this week."

With the report of it being hard-pressed for them to work back onto the practice field soon, there probably will not be much optimism about them potentially being on the field for the second preseason game on Friday, August 21st against the New York Jets either.

The offense did look much different and more improved on Thursday night, especially as the team used more of the middle of the field compared to years past. However, the two biggest weapons in the wide receiver being out may leave some things left to be desired in terms of chemistry if their injuries continue to linger and they cannot get on the field ahead of Week 1.

Steelers' Chemistry Vital To Success Following Sweeping Changes

Rookie wide receiver Germie Bernard was recently praised by Rudolph, citing how he tries to soak up what he can from the veteran duo of Pittman and Metcalf. However, if the rookie does earn significant playing time for his first NFL season in 2026, getting some reps under his belt with those veterans on the field before Week 1 in game action can only help his development even further. With that considered, this recent update makes the possibility of that happening very questionable.

In order for things to be successful in the first year of the new regime in the Steel City, chemistry is going to play a big role in that. While quarterback Aaron Rodgers has worked with McCarthy for an extended amount of time in the past in the league, there is a large majority of players that are learning the style of how things are expected to be done

Poor communication is one thing that has plagued the team on both sides of the ball in recent years and having solid chemistry with each other can go a long way in improving that.

If players can get on the same page as one another, it can go a long way in knowing each others tendencies and improving that communication issue. While this update should not be too alarming for the long-term health status of the veteran wide receivers for the Black and Gold, it could be an issue if communication continues to plague the team on the field in the regular season.

With the Black and Gold kicking off the regular season a little over two weeks after their final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, getting Metcalf and Pittman back on the field in that game could provide a boost in camaraderie on the field.
