Steelers Legend Ben Roethlisberger Faces Explosive Sabotage Accusation From Le'Veon Bell

The Pittsburgh Steelers had one of the NFL's most dangerous offenses during the prime years of Ben Roethlisberger, Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown, but stories from inside that era continue to reveal just how complicated things could become behind the scenes. Bell has never been shy about discussing his time in Pittsburgh, yet his latest story involving Roethlisberger takes things to another level. According to Bell, what initially looked like a frustrating performance against the Cleveland Browns eventually became something much more suspicious when he went back and studied what happened. Bell now believes Roethlisberger was intentionally making life harder on him throughout the game.

Bell explained that the tension stemmed from his decision not to attend training camp before the season, something Roethlisberger had publicly discussed by questioning whether the running back would be rusty. Bell said those comments eventually caused him to question himself, even though he knew what he was capable of doing when he returned. During the game, however, Bell said nothing immediately seemed intentional. It was only later, after remembering certain throws, substitutions and missed opportunities, that the former Steelers star began putting everything together.

Bell told the story while speaking unfiltered on the Ball in the Family Podcast with Lonzo and Gelo Ball. His first example involved a play called "Brownie," when Bell ran an out route and Roethlisberger fired a difficult pass toward the sideline before immediately demanding a substitution after Bell failed to secure it.

"Ben called a play called Brownie," Bell said. "I run my out route and Ben lasers that b**** fast as f*** to the sideline. Bro, I mean he's so great at throwing the ball, so good. He lasered it perfectly to where it's like right outside my reach and I couldn't reach it. But it hit my hands and looked like a drop. [Ben yells], 'Get him out. He don't know what he's doing. Get him out.'"

Bell said Pittsburgh immediately went to an empty formation after Roethlisberger demanded that he leave the game. At the time, Bell thought it may have been because he missed camp. However, he didn't realize the full extent until years later.

Another play made Bell even more suspicious. He described running a swing route out of the backfield with plenty of open space in front of him, only for Roethlisberger to place the football behind him. Bell still made the difficult catch, but having to turn his body allowed the defense to erase what he believed could have been a significant gain.

"‘Cause I know he's probably mad because I didn't come for the training camp," Bell said. "At the time, I'm in the game, so I'm not really thinking about this. I started thinking about it like this later... Next time I come back in, I run a swing route from the backfield. I'm open as f***. Ben knows I'm open as f***, but he's so good at putting it exactly where he wants. He kinda throws it behind me a little bit. He knows I'm extra, so I'm gonna turn and catch the ball. ‘Cause I already had a drop earlier in the game. I'm not about to have two of them."

Bell said that difficult placement forced him to regain his balance before looking up and discovering defenders already closing in around him. In Bell's mind, a normal throw could have produced approximately 15 additional yards. Still, he insisted none of those moments were enough to make him believe something intentional was happening while the game was being played. Then came the play that changed everything for him.

Bell described Pittsburgh lining up in what he considered a perfect look against Cleveland's defense. With only Bell and Roethlisberger in the backfield able to clearly see the play clock, Bell watched the seconds disappear without the quarterback calling for the snap.

"It was the perfect defense, like ain't no way they can stop this s***," Bell said. "Like I'm just waiting for Ben to give me the f****** ball, bro... I'm looking at the clock because it's just me and Ben in the backfield. We're the only ones who can see the play clock. It's going down, five, four, three, two, one. I'm like, 'Ben, we got three seconds.' It go to zero, the refs come in, throw the flag, blow the whistle. That's when it hit me like, bro, he did that s*** on purpose, bro."

Lonzo Ball appeared stunned by the accusation and immediately questioned why Roethlisberger would willingly do something that could hurt Pittsburgh's offense. Bell's answer was simple. He believes Roethlisberger wanted to make an example out of him for missing training camp.

Steelers Fans Have Every Reason To Be Stunned By Bell's Claim

There is no way to definitively prove Roethlisberger intentionally sabotaged individual plays without hearing his side of the story, and Bell is explaining events that occurred years ago through his own perspective. Still, the specificity of the examples makes this much harder to dismiss as a former teammate simply taking a random shot. Bell is essentially alleging that one of the greatest quarterbacks in Steelers history was willing to sacrifice potential offensive production to send a message to one of the league's best running backs.

That would be an astonishing dynamic considering how much talent Pittsburgh had during that era. Steelers fans spent years wondering how teams featuring Roethlisberger, Bell and Brown consistently fell short of reaching another Super Bowl, and stories like this only add another uncomfortable layer to that discussion. Those offenses were historically talented, but talent alone apparently did not eliminate the personalities, disagreements and internal friction developing underneath everything.

Bell's account will undoubtedly create debate about whether he is accurately interpreting Roethlisberger's intentions after the fact. What cannot be debated is how incredible the accusation itself is. If Roethlisberger ever responds publicly, Steelers fans may finally get the other side of one of the wildest behind-the-scenes stories to emerge from that unforgettable era in Pittsburgh.
