Steelers' "Impasse" With Joey Porter Jr Is Starting To Cause A Severe Lack Of Faith In Potential Deal

In a recent press conference, Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike McCarthy spoke about contract negotiations with star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. reaching an "impasse" as the two sides are reportedly nowhere near an agreement. Multiple reports have stated that the team has no interest in trading him away as they continue to work to at least find some common ground, but there may be a breaking point where it decides to just hear out some offers and see if any are worth it. With the preseason wrapping up shortly, this will have to be the focus until Week 1. 

With everything that has been happening over the past month, there is still lots of hope that Porter will be on the field for Week 1 with a major extension keeping him around for the long-term future. Considering the fact that the Steelers don't negotiate with players during the season, someone will have to break and cave in to the other's desires. Who it would be is to be determined. 

Insider Ray Fittipaldo is starting to second guess everything now. In his latest Q&A chat, he spoke about his wavering faith in these negotiation talks.

"I'm beginning to have my doubts," Fittipaldo said. "The Steelers place a value on all of the players who are up for contracts. I think Porter and his agent have a much higher value... and thus we have an 'impasse' as Mike McCarthy termed it."

Reports have recently surfaced that claimed Porter either is going to be the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history or that's the main thing he's fighting for. However, it has become very clear that the Steelers don't think he's very close to being worth $33+ million per year. Both sides have refused to budge, which has led to these negotiations barely making progress, if they've even made any.

After the final preseason game, the Steelers will have just over two weeks to extend Porter. With how far apart they are, who knows if they can bridge the gap in time for Week 1. Unless one side completely caves in, the next two weeks will be very ugly as all the focus will be on this. Pittsburgh may be forced to consider a trade if this impasse goes on for much longer. 

Roster cutdown day will occur shortly after the end of the preseason. The Steelers will have to take Porter off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list before then or else he will have to miss at least the first four games of the 2026 season. If the cornerback remains on the PUP list, it would be much harder for him to be signed or traded.

Steelers May Use Porter To Try And Get A Franchise Quarterback

The argument for trading Porter away is that he will net a massive return, which could include at least one first-round pick. That could be exactly what the Steelers need to move up in the 2027 NFL Draft and finally get the franchise quarterback that the team has been desperate for. Any team in the NFL would happily trade an elite cornerback for an elite passer without thinking twice.

On top of that, the Steelers have great depth at cornerback. They signed Jamel Dean to be the veteran starter on the outside, and Asante Samuel Jr. has been the MVP of training camp. He looks like he could be a great starter now. Third-round rookie Daylen Everette has quietly been solid ever since being drafted by Pittsburgh, and he could use some meaningful reps to help him develop.
