"Price To Pay": Mike Tomlin Believes Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Was Sending Urgent Message To Roman Wilson

It's not unfair to say that the Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receiver position has been in limbo for several years now. The hope is that the 2026 unit is able to produce at a high level, particularly because of the one-two punch of DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. Behind them, however, there are two very intriguing young pass-catchers who could be battling for playing time throughout the year. Roman Wilson has yet to truly get settled at the professional level as he enters his third campaign, and Germie Bernard is the rookie who has his sights set on starting his career off on the right foot.

For better or for worse, the unit has to answer to Aaron Rodgers, who is historically one of the toughest quarterbacks to play for. He holds his teammates accountable regardless of and age and experience. There are probably plenty of moments behind closed doors when he has called players out during his Hall of Fame career, but it has always been the public call-outs that demand attention.

This was apparent on Wednesday when the signal-caller directly called out Wilson for making a mistake during practice. While Rodgers did make it known that the wideout had a phenomenal month of August, it's clear that he still doesn't have complete confidence in the former third-round selection. That's why the relationship will be something to monitor moving forward.

Former Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin is very aware of how Rodgers operates after working with him during the 2025 season. During an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show on Thursday, there was a lot of good discussion about Pittsburgh. When asked about Wilson somewhat getting called out by his quarterback, Tomlin went into detail about the situation.

"It's a teachable moment. He's acknowledging that [Wilson] is a young and developing player," Tomlin said. "He's also educating him to the fact that as long as you're having new issues, then progress is [not] being made. [Having] repeat errors, there's a price to pay for that; and so, he's rapping him on the beak while, at the same time, putting his arms around him. And, I think Aaron does a great job of managing that and utilizing media opportunities to do both."

One of the most notable comments from Tomlin is about there being a price to pay. This is a subtle warning that Rodgers won't trust Wilson in games if he is going to show that he is incapable of making the necessary adjustments. Rodgers was careful after his call out as he complimented the wide receiver; however, there appears to still be some trouble in paradise.

That wasn't all Tomlin had to say about what happened on Wednesday. He gave an in-depth look of why Rodgers is so focused on occasionally calling out his teammates when all eyes are on an interview or press conference.

"I just think it's a component of leadership. It's certainly a component of his leadership style," Tomlin stated. "I'm sure because of his ability to  develop individual relationships, that it's received in the right spirit from Roman."

All that really matters in this sense is what Tomlin said at the end. If Wilson receives it well and is not upset at the quarterback for his public commentary, then it shouldn't really bother anyone. However, the former head coach would know over anyone else if Wilson is walking on thin ice. If mistakes continue, a price will be paid, and that could be Wilson watching Bernard take over the starting spot on offense.

Steelers Are Hoping That Both Wilson And Bernard Emerge

Injuries are part of the game. Pittsburgh doesn't want to see Metcalf or Pittman miss any games, but they have both been banged up for several weeks. It will be imperative for Wilson and Bernard to play well when given the opportunities, especially if a starting spot is up for grabs in the event that one of the top two have to miss a contest, or multiple. Overall, there is very little time to work out kinks, so Wilson has to make sure he is ready to go.
