The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of emerging talent on the roster that is giving the entire organization hope that the future is very bright, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The wide receiver room consists of a strong mix of talented veterans and promising young players, a group that has been a major headline for the team this preseason.

The wide receiver position has always been a major strength for the Steelers historically, whether it be draft projects that developed into stars, free agency signings that had a second peak in Pittsburgh, or trades that resulted in star players donning the Black and Gold. The past few seasons, though, have seen some questions surrounding this position group. Pittsburgh traded for DK Metcalf in March 2025 to complement breakout star wide receiver George Pickens. This did not last long however, as the team subsequently shipped out Pickens roughly two months later, resulting in the duo never seeing the field together. Metcalf had a rollercoaster of a season in 2025, with no true No. 2 receiver behind him.
In the background, Pittsburgh's 2024 third-round draft selection, Roman Wilson, has quietly been developing into the team's next potential gem. Wilson played all four of his collegiate seasons at the University of Michigan and became a very reliable target, racking up a total of 107 receptions for 1,707 yards and 20 touchdowns. Wilson missed all but five snaps of his rookie season and showed small flashes in 2025, but the team has seen a lot of progress in the receiver's development heading into his third NFL season. He is set to strongly compete for the third wide receiver spot on the depth chart, operating mainly out of the slot.
Wilson has a lot of potential, and it is being noticed by those within the organization. During a recent episode of The Christian Kuntz Podcast, current Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz expressed his excitement about the development of the speedy wide receiver.
"It's cool to see young emerging players... My dog Roman Wilson, I'm excited for him," Kuntz explained. "I have been talking about him for three years. I think it's a big opportunity for him."
Wilson has the confidence of the organization behind him, something that is huge for a young player of his caliber.

Pittsburgh's offense has been shaky at times the last few seasons. This can be attributed to a lot of different positions and factors, but having a plethora of skilled pass catchers is always a boost, and the hope is that Wilson can elevate his game to the level of wide receivers that Steelers fans are accustomed to.
Steelers Have Bolstered The Wide Receiver Room
Wilson is not the only wide receiver that the organization is counting on. Pittsburgh acquired veteran receiver Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts during the 2026 offseason. He then signed a three-year, $59 million contract extension with the team ahead of the upcoming 2026 regular season. The Steelers also drafted wide receiver Germie Bernard with the 47th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Bernard, who totaled 114 receptions for 1,656 yards and 9 touchdowns in his final two collegiate seasons with the Alabama Crimson Tide, has shown a lot of promise. He has been turning heads all preseason, whether it has been in camp or during the Steelers' preseason games. Bernard looks NFL-ready and has been spoken of highly by his teammates and coaches.
Pittsburgh has a very diverse group of pass catchers, as all of these players have different skill sets and can be used in many different schemes. It seems that there is a new era of wide receivers in the Steel City. It will be very interesting to see where each of these players fit into the offense this upcoming season, and which of them will truly break out as the next great wide receiver for the Black and Gold.
