Steelers' Cam Heyward Gave Joey Porter Jr Valuable Advice Amid Contract Negotiations

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a standoff with star cornerback Joey Porter Jr., as the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on an extension. While Porter and his team negotiate with General Manager Omar Khan, the organization must prepare for its Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons with or without the cornerback. After coming off the best season of his career, Porter is looking to be among the NFL's highest-paid cornerbacks, and if he and the organization cannot agree, the team could be without its best player in the secondary for the long haul.

Pittsburgh has solid depth at cornerback, with Asante Samuel Jr. and rookie third-round pick Daylen Everette having promising preseasons. Even with Samuel's veteran presence and Everette's potential as a prospect, they likely won't be enough to fill the hole Porter could leave behind. The Penn State standout may not have the ball production, but he eliminates the opposing team's top target consistently, and that is a very tall task for the players behind him. 

The Steelers often find themselves in long, drawn-out negotiations, which have typically led to the player participating in a hold-in. Last season, Cam Heyward held out from team activities for much of training camp after wanting a raise on his current contract. Heyward signed an extension following the 2023 season and felt he overperformed the value of his deal. 

With Porter looking to receive the compensation he believes he is worth, Heyward gave the cornerback some valuable advice. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo spoke to Heyward following Wednesday's practice, where he revealed the advice he gave Porter. The veteran advised Porter to stay involved and be ready for the season, showing the organization he's worth the money he's seeking. 

"I just told him it's a process," Heyward said. "He has to understand things are done differently here. Keep your head up, stay involved, and stay ready because the worst thing is to not be ready. You have to show people you deserve the contract you get."

While players participate in hold-ins and work out on the side, they can miss valuable team reps and the ramp-up period. Porter has returned to practice, but he hasn't participated in any team drills. With a new scheme being implemented this offseason, he could be missing out on very valuable information. Heyward advised the cornerback to stay locked in and be ready for the season no matter what happens. 

The Steelers are no strangers to this dilemma. In 2021, superstar edge rusher TJ Watt participated in a hold-in and skipped team drills. He signed his extension just two days before the season opener, and Watt certainly didn't disappoint. He finished with two sacks and a forced fumble in an upset win, and he would go on to tie the sack record that season and win the Defensive Player of the Year Award. 

Steelers' Porter Has Lots Of Pressure On Him

Porter has played three years in the NFL and has improved in each season. He knows what it takes to play an NFL season, but he hasn't proved to be in the tier of Watt and other superstars. They can't and likely won't rely on him to have a season similar to Watt's in 2021 after signing his extension so late. The sooner they sign the defensive back, the sooner he can get on the field. 

Porter will be expected to be the team's top cornerback when he is inserted into the lineup and will cover the opposing team's No. 1 wide receiver, as he often does. Without the ramp-up of training camp and preseason to prepare, Porter will have a ton of pressure to live up to the contract he wants right away. If he plays, it will be interesting to see how Porter performs early in the season.
