It would be extremely ideal for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Joey Porter Jr. to resolve their differences. The cornerback was selected with the first pick of the second round in the 2023 NFL Draft, and has been nothing but productive since. During the 2026 offseason, he saw three of his counterparts from that same year receive new contracts. The defender was expected to get the most lucrative new deal out of them all; however, nothing has actually taken place. It's unlikely as well, with the organization refusing to have negotiations take place once meaningful football begins.

At the moment, it's unclear if Porter is even able to suit up and play. When the guys showed up for training camp, the cornerback apparently suffered some kind of back injury on the first day. He has done light work since, but has yet to log a full practice. Some believe this could be due to his contract situation. On the other hand, what if he is actually banged up?
The only people who know the answers to those questions will never reveal the answers. The former second-round pick and his camp would be validated if they said that they were displeased with the state of Porter's future with the team at the moment. All of this has led to some distractions with the season underway. Now, many are curious as to whether Porter will play in Week 2.
This brings up another intriguing hypothetical. Porter is under contract, so if he is refusing to play, then he theoretically would be eligible for a fine, or multiple fines, from the Steelers. With that said, the back injury is apparently lingering. This enters a grey area that not many can understand properly. At the end of the day, an insider gave a firm answer on the possibility.
Gerry Dulac hosted his weekly chat for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Wednesday and a fan chimed in regarding financial consequences for the Penn State product. On the franchise's end, it cannot do anything to try and push Porter because of the alleged ailment. This was made very clear by the reporter when he addressed the likelihood.
"They can't fine him if he continues to say he has back pain. There are no blood tests to determine levels of pain, so they can only go on what he says," Dulac wrote. "I don't think the Steelers are eager to trade him right away, but not for the reason you might think. But if a GM comes with a really good offer, now that's different. Remember they got a [second-round] pick for Chase Claypool, which, as irony would have it, turned out to be Porter."
Dulac made sure to confirm that the Steelers have absolutely no right to threaten Porter with fines. His back could be in really bad shape. There's also the possibility that it isn't causing him any pain. If it were, he probably would have landed on Injured Reserve (IR). The bottom line is that no one can prove anything. The beat writer also added some context about what it would take for Pittsburgh to trade its top corner.

This situation could resolve itself soon, or it could drag out until the 2027 offseason. The Steelers would have to break a decades-long tradition by giving Porter a new deal prior to Week 2's game. So, dealing him hasn't been ruled out because no one knows just how murky the situation is behind closed doors. If all sides can reconcile, Porter could also heal up pretty quickly and be ready to play versus the New England Patriots.
Steelers Clearly Had A Specific Plan In Mind All Along
While Pittsburgh may come off as an organization that botched this entire process, Omar Khan and Co. knew all along what the market was trending toward. Instead of trying to get ahead of it back in March, the decision was made to hold off. The franchise tag is projected to be roughly $23 million in 2027, so the leverage has always been on the side of the Steelers. Now, because fines cannot be handed down, all eyes will be on Porter's back injury and whether it will heal up or not.
