The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally received an encouraging development in their ongoing situation with star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. After missing the first three games of the 2026 season, Porter was listed as a full participant for the first time under head coach Mike McCarthy on Monday. The development comes at an important time for Pittsburgh, which is preparing for a Thursday night showdown against the Cleveland Browns following its thrilling 30-27 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Porter's absence has been one of the biggest storylines surrounding the Steelers since training camp. Between his lingering back injury, conditioning concerns and unresolved contract situation, Pittsburgh has been forced to navigate the opening weeks of the season without one of its most talented defensive players. However, Monday's development represents meaningful progress toward potentially getting Porter back on the field.
Steelers insider Mike DeFabo highlighted the development surrounding Porter on Monday as Pittsburgh began preparing for Cleveland. The cornerback was listed as a full participant on the team's estimated injury report, marking an important change from his previous limited designations. McCarthy has also left open the possibility that Porter could make his season debut against the Browns.
"Joey Porter Jr. was listed as a full participant for the first time under Mike McCarthy," DeFabo said. "This is an estimation since the Steelers only held a walk thru. Still, the way to read this is the team expects Joey Porter Jr. to play, barring a setback. Weโll see if he does."
That distinction is particularly important because Pittsburgh is operating on a short week. Monday's injury report was an estimation rather than confirmation that Porter completed an entire practice. Nevertheless, the designation represents the clearest indication yet that the Steelers believe their young cornerback is progressing toward being ready for game action.

Porter has been working through a lengthy recovery process after experiencing back problems at the beginning of training camp. He eventually returned to the active roster but continued participating in practice on a limited basis. Despite gradually increasing his workload, the Steelers elected to keep him inactive for their first three games.
The situation became even more complicated because of Porter's contract negotiations. McCarthy previously acknowledged that Pittsburgh and its young cornerback had reached an impasse regarding a potential extension. Although the financial situation generated considerable attention, Porter recently explained that his focus had shifted toward getting himself physically ready to return. His return would provide Pittsburgh with an important addition at a position that has suddenly become a major concern.
Steelers' Joey Porter Jr. Could Return At Critical Time For Defense
The timing of Porter's progress couldn't be much better for the Steelers. Pittsburgh's secondary is dealing with multiple injury concerns following Sunday's victory, including Brandin Echols entering concussion protocol and Jalen Ramsey reportedly being spotted with his right arm in a sling. Jamel Dean has also been managing an ankle injury, leaving McCarthy with several important decisions ahead of Thursday night's matchup.
Getting Porter back would immediately strengthen Pittsburgh's outside cornerback rotation. His physical coverage style and experience defending opposing teams' top receivers have been missing throughout the opening three weeks. With the Steelers currently sitting at 2-1, his potential return could help stabilize a defense that has been forced to rely on several different combinations in the secondary.
However, Monday's encouraging designation doesn't guarantee Porter will suit up against Cleveland. The Steelers still need to determine whether he is physically prepared to handle an entire game after missing training camp and the opening three contests. His participation over the next two days should provide a clearer indication of whether Thursday's matchup is a realistic possibility.
For now, Pittsburgh finally has a positive development in a situation that has generated considerable frustration. Porter has taken an important step toward returning, and the Steelers could soon have one of their most talented defensive players back on the field.
