Steelers Get Latest Update On DeShon Elliott's Potential Return

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be getting closer to welcoming an important defensive starter back onto the field. Veteran safety DeShon Elliott has been sidelined on injured reserve, but his potential return is beginning to generate attention as Pittsburgh prepares for the next stretch of its 2026 season. However, there is still considerable uncertainty surrounding exactly when Elliott will be cleared to resume practicing under head coach Mike McCarthy.

Elliott's absence has forced the Steelers to adjust their defensive personnel while navigating the opening weeks of the season. Pittsburgh has already dealt with uncertainty surrounding several important members of its secondary, including cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Getting Elliott back would provide another experienced defender capable of helping stabilize a unit that has been forced to make adjustments throughout the early portion of the season.

Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo recently discussed Elliott's potential return alongside fellow Pittsburgh reporter Mark Kaboly while speaking on the Steelers Collective podcast on Tuesday. Although Elliott could become eligible to have his practice window opened as early as Monday, Fittipaldo acknowledged that there hasn't been much information surrounding his recovery. The lack of updates has created additional questions about how close the veteran safety actually is to returning.

"Yeah, right, they could open up his window on Monday, but more than likely, they would probably do it Wednesday if he's ready," Fittipaldo said. "There's just not been a lot of chatter about him. I was surprised he went on IR in the first place. We really don't have much information in the last month either."

Fittipaldo's comments highlight an interesting situation surrounding one of Pittsburgh's established defensive contributors. While the Steelers have provided injury updates on several other players, Elliott's recovery has remained relatively quiet. That makes it difficult to determine whether his absence is nearing its conclusion or whether Pittsburgh intends to give him additional time before bringing him back.

Kaboly also weighed in on Elliott's situation, offering an encouraging observation about the veteran safety's presence around the team. Although he expressed some confusion about the length of Elliott's absence, Kaboly suggested that the defensive back could be approaching his return.

"He's around, though. I mean, you see him," Kaboly said. "It's not like he's missing in action. I'm still curious why he needed a month and a half or whatever it was off. I would imagine he's darn close. Just think once we get rid of Porter, we can ramp up DeShon Elliott."

The Steelers' secondary has already experienced its share of adversity, making Elliott's eventual return especially important. Brandin Echols entered concussion protocol following Sunday's victory over Cincinnati, while Jalen Ramsey was reportedly spotted with his arm in a sling. Pittsburgh has also been monitoring Porter's "recovery", leaving the coaching staff with several personnel decisions heading into its matchup with Cleveland.

Elliott brings a physical presence that Pittsburgh has been missing. His ability to contribute against the run, communicate defensive assignments and provide versatility in coverage would give defensive coordinator Patrick Graham additional flexibility. More importantly, his return would help reduce the pressure on a secondary that has already been forced to rely on several different combinations.

McCarthy previously praised Elliott's dedication to rehabilitation, explaining that the veteran safety had made considerable progress despite needing additional recovery time. The Steelers designated Elliott to return when placing him on injured reserve before the regular season, ensuring he would have an opportunity to rejoin the defense once medically cleared.

However, Pittsburgh must first navigate Thursday's divisional matchup against Cleveland. Elliott is required to miss the first four games, making the Steelers' following contest the earliest opportunity for his return. If the coaching staff believes he is ready, the coming week could finally bring some clarity to the entire situation.

Kaboly's observation that Elliott has remained around the team offers an encouraging sign, even if his exact recovery timeline remains uncertain. Pittsburgh would undoubtedly benefit from getting its experienced safety back, particularly as injuries continue testing the depth of its secondary. For now, Steelers fans will have to wait for the team to officially open his practice window before anticipating his return.
