Steelers Get Latest Update On Jalen Ramsey Playing Browns With Broken Wrist

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be forced to make an extremely difficult decision with veteran defensive back Jalen Ramsey ahead of Thursday night's AFC North showdown against the Cleveland Browns. Ramsey revealed that he is dealing with a broken wrist, but the veteran isn't immediately ruling himself out of Pittsburgh's upcoming divisional matchup. His comments make it clear that his availability will ultimately come down to whether he can protect the injury without sacrificing the aggressive style that has made him one of the NFL's premier defensive backs.

Ramsey has never been the type of player who wants to watch from the sideline, and his willingness to attempt to play through a broken wrist shouldn't surprise anyone familiar with his career. However, this isn't simply a matter of dealing with pain. Ramsey has to tackle, fight through blocks, use his hands in coverage and potentially put that wrist directly into harm's way throughout an entire football game. At this stage of his career, there is also little reason to unnecessarily jeopardize his health if he can't properly protect the injury.

That appears to be exactly how Ramsey is approaching the situation. He certainly sounds hopeful about playing against Cleveland, but he also understands that wanting to compete and actually being capable of performing at his usual level are two different things. 

Ramsey explained via 93.7 The Fan that protecting the wrist and ensuring he can still be himself will ultimately determine whether he feels comfortable taking the field.

"It's not like it's a real injury, it's a broken wrist," Ramsey said. "I can't really do anything about it. It's going to be about seeing if I'm able to protect it and still be myself and good enough if I go out there. I won't let my teammates down."

That final portion of Ramsey's statement might be the most important. He isn't simply asking himself whether he can physically make it through Thursday night's game. 

Ramsey is asking whether he can actually help the Steelers while playing with the injury. If the broken wrist prevents him from tackling properly, playing physically or performing his responsibilities within Pittsburgh's defense, forcing himself onto the field could potentially hurt the team more than help it.

Ramsey was even more direct when asked specifically about his chances of playing against the Browns.

"Of course, I'm going to try to, but I have to be able to protect it," Ramsey said.

There is something encouraging about Ramsey refusing to immediately concede the game, especially considering Pittsburgh's situation in the secondary. At the same time, the Steelers have to think beyond one Thursday night matchup. Ramsey is an important piece of this defense, and putting him in a position where the injury could become significantly worse would be a dangerous gamble if he isn't properly protected.

The physical nature of Ramsey's role makes the situation particularly difficult. Pittsburgh has utilized his versatility to move him around the defense, and that naturally creates opportunities for contact. Ramsey isn't simply being asked to run alongside a receiver and avoid collisions. He has built much of his reputation on being willing to play aggressively, attack ball carriers and embrace responsibilities that require considerably more physicality.

That's why Ramsey's comment about still being himself shouldn't be overlooked. There is a significant difference between being medically capable of stepping onto the field and being capable of playing winning football. Ramsey clearly understands that distinction, and his concern about potentially letting his teammates down shows why he isn't treating Thursday as an automatic decision.

The Steelers would obviously love to have Ramsey available against Cleveland. Divisional games routinely become physical battles, and Pittsburgh doesn't want to enter an important road matchup without one of its most experienced defensive players. Ramsey's versatility and understanding of opposing offenses provide value that goes beyond whatever appears on the stat sheet. Steelers fans will have to watch closely to see if Ramsey is good to go against the Browns.
