Steelers Could Now Make Intriguing Move For Cornerback Trevon Diggs

The Pittsburgh Steelers' secondary took another big blow after the recent trade of Joey Porter Jr. Cornerback Jamel Dean suffered an ankle injury in the Steelers' Week 4 matchup with the rival Cleveland Browns, which is expected to sideline him for a couple of weeks. Pittsburgh would eventually lose this contest by a final score of 27-24. This game exposed a lot of Pittsburgh's weaknesses, especially at the cornerback position. Because of these recent developments, Pittsburgh could possibly be in the market to add another veteran defensive back to this unit.

A name that has been floating around regarding a possible Pittsburgh signing is veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs. Diggs was a standout cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys, but has moved around the league since 2025. He had a quick stint with the Green Bay Packers and is now with the Seattle Seahawks. If Pittsburgh has interest, it seems like the Steel City would be a great place for Diggs to attempt a career resurgence. The team is looking very thin at the cornerback position, and with a few of the Steelers' defensive backs being young players, a veteran like Diggs could potentially help the younger players develop. Diggs also played under current Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy during their tenures in Dallas. The familiarity between the two could make this potential move that much more comfortable for both sides.

During a recent episode of Kaboly + Mack Live, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly discussed Diggs as a potential option for Pittsburgh.

"Trevon Diggs is an option, especially because they know him," Kaboly explained. "We saw it with Arthur Smith, he came in and brought some of his guys with him. McCarthy has brought in Brock Hoffman and Rico Dowdle, people he is familiar with. I do not see why that [Diggs] would not be an option."

While Diggs has not produced much in the last couple of seasons, he has the experience needed to provide some kind of boost to Pittsburgh's secondary. The Steelers' defense has been dominant at times through the first four weeks of the 2026 regular season, but help in the defensive back room could provide more stability for the unit and allow them to perform more consistently.

While Pittsburgh still has solid contributors in the secondary such as veterans Jalen Ramsey and Jaquan Brisker, the inexperience of the rest of the group does not bode well for the defense's chances of success for the rest of the season.

There is hope surrounding safety DeShon Elliott and his chance to get back on the field in the coming weeks as he rehabs a lingering hamstring issue. The return of Elliott and a possible addition to the secondary, such as Diggs, could provide Steelers fans with some confidence that this group of defensive backs will be able to perform well enough to turn this area from a weakness into a strength for the team.

Steelers Bolster Secondary By Signing Veteran Cornerback

Pittsburgh signed veteran cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad on Monday morning. He has appeared in 82 NFL games with 65 career starts and recorded 11 career interceptions. The hope is that he can add some ball-hawking skills to this thin secondary. While this is a nice addition for the Steelers' defense, the team could still use more help. Murphy-Bunting is not a big name signing, but does have experience in the league. He also played alongside Dean in Tampa Bay as the duo helped the team win Super Bowl LV.

Murphy-Bunting will surely provide some veteran presence on this defense, but another addition to the cornerback room might be what the Steelers need to shore up the unit after the recent trade of Porter Jr. and the injury to Dean. It will be interesting to see what the secondary looks like when the Steelers host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5.
