The Pittsburgh Steelers have already suffered two losses in the AFC. If that trend continues, it will be difficult to win tiebreakers come late December and into January. That's why, despite it only being October, a Week 5 battle against the 2-2 Indianapolis Colts is a significant contest. The winner will improve to 3-2 and have the head-to-head advantage, providing some comfort if the two sides are fighting for Wild Card spots later on. After dropping a Thursday Night Football showdown to the Cleveland Browns, Mike McCarthy's group had a mini-bye to collect its thoughts and figure out how to move forward.

A couple of pressing issues that have developed for the Steelers are health and depth in the secondary. Joey Porter Jr. was traded to the Dallas Cowboys and Jamel Dean suffered an injury against the Browns. The projected top two cornerbacks from early in training camp are now not going to play with one another. Additionally, Dean could be absent for a little bit of time if his ailment is serious.
The defense is going to have to adjust, so the 10-day break following the Cleveland disaster should be beneficial. Practice will be critical when it comes to figuring out what the best combinations will need to be. This is something that McCarthy is certain to task Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham with as the collective prepares during the week.
On Monday, the Steelers' head coach spoke with the media during his weekly press conference. He was asked about the secondary and what the expectation is for that unit after the injuries recently. He was relatively broad when touching on what he is planning for versus the Colts. However, he did not stutter when letting everyone know that he expects to have three wins for the season when the clock strikes zero.
"We'll be ready to go and I expect us to win the game, and I expect every position to contribute," McCarthy said. "So, we'll continue to work the players that are there and we'll continue to find the right combinations that give us a chance to win."
These were no slight words from Pittsburgh's leader. He has consistently emphasized how important it is to win at home, and it's more than just trying to do so. McCarthy is confident in guaranteeing a win. The Colts have won two in a row, but are coming back to the United States after playing in an international game, which could put them at a disadvantage. Regardless, it's very clear that the Steelers are fully relying on a victory inside the building.

Indianapolis has had some defensive struggles through four weeks, so the offense, which is led by McCarthy, will be expected to perform. The Steelers defense will be coming in with some serious bumps and bruises. With that, not every starter is lined up to play. This won't be an easy matchup to be victorious in. These are two franchises that would prefer to stay above the .500 mark.
The Steel City demands excellence. That is why it is notable when the head coach comes out and essentially guarantees a win. There was no specific mention of the Colts when McCarthy was speaking. It also came off as him thinking a win is attainable each and every week. It's always good to be confident, but it is walking a fine line of giving the opposition bulletin board material. Overall, McCarthy needs to hope that his roster responds accordingly come Sunday.
Steelers Can't Afford To Start Off The 2026 Season With A Record Of 2-3
Pittsburgh has a brutal schedule toward the end of the year. It will be very difficult to bounce back if the group goes into December with only five or six wins. That is why games like the ones against the Colts are pivotal to later making the postseason. McCarthy seems to be aware of that as well, because he was not afraid to go on the record and say that he believes the Steelers are going to be moving to 3-2, rather than 2-3.
