The Pittsburgh Steelers have had two names headlining the offense since the start of the 2025 NFL season: Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf. Rodgers is seemingly still playing decent football at age 42, while Metcalf has the ability to make a big play at any time. One thing that is still certain is Rodgers' confidence and respect for Metcalf as a high-level NFL wide receiver.

With all the questions around Rodgers' ability to still compete as he enters his presumed last season in the NFL, the bigger issue has been Metcalf's overall performance. He has noticeably gotten in his own head at times, especially through the first four games of the 2026 season. Many Steelers fans have lost faith in Metcalf and his level of talent.
Rodgers has not however, as he still speaks of Metcalf in very high regard. On the field, it is evident that he still trusts Metcalf as the first option in the offense. Metcalf leads the Steelers in targets through the first four games, with 24. While Metcalf had an abysmal first two games in 2026, he has since turned it around, recording 8 receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown in the last two weeks.
Metcalf has all the tools to be a great wide receiver, as he has shown he is capable of doing so. After being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2019, Metcalf recorded at least 900 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns in each of his first six seasons in the NFL. He has been a great model of consistency at the wide receiver position, and has still shown promise in Pittsburgh. It seems like the noise surrounding Metcalf is louder than his performance, as he still can dominate opposing defensive backs when in the right headspace.
During a recent media scrum, Rodgers spoke about Metcalf's passion and what it does for him as a professional.
"His passion is very positively skewed this season," Rodgers explained. "We all lose our minds at times out on the field... DK is a passionate guy and you just got to let him go because that passion is what makes him such a great player."
With all the recent criticism toward Metcalf, Rodgers' words could be very powerful. Knowing that a quarterback of Rodgers' status has confidence in you, even through hard times, has to be refreshing as a wide receiver. While a lot of fans have begun to turn their backs on Metcalf, what really matters is Rodgers' belief in him to produce at an efficient level.

Metcalf has a huge opportunity to gain traction in the coming weeks as Steelers' veteran wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. is dealing with a foot injury and is listed as week-to-week. Metcalf should continue to demand a large target share in Pittsburgh's offense and the hope is that he can keep producing like he did in Weeks 3 and 4. Steelers fans should not be surprised if Metcalf uses the criticism as fuel and dominates for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Steelers' Matchups Have Not Made Life Easy For Metcalf
Pittsburgh has faced some tough secondaries to begin the 2026 regular season. In Week 1, Metcalf matched up with A.J. Terrell Jr. of the Atlanta Falcons. Terrell Jr. is widely regarded as one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. In Week 2, it was even worse Metcalf. Christian Gonzalez from the New England Patriots, who may very well be the best cornerback in the league, matched up with the Steelers' wideout for much of the contest. In Weeks 3 and 4, it was more of the same, with Metcalf going up against the Cincinnati Bengals' DJ Turner and the Cleveland Browns' Denzel Ward, two more of the higher-end cornerbacks across the NFL.
The NFL is a ruthless place, and while tough matchups are no excuse for mediocre play, these first four matchups were a gauntlet for Metcalf, and yet he was still able to come out of this stretch with a couple of solid performances. Look for Metcalf to heat up as the season goes on.
