Steelers Rookie Carries A Strong Chip On His Shoulder: "I Don't Take Disrespect"

The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the largest rookie classes in the NFL after the organization drafted 10 players back in April. The franchise originally went into the event with 12 selections, but two of them were used to maneuver the draft board. The roster currently includes 11 rookies, as Kevin Jobity Jr. was also added as an undrafted free agent. There are several rookies that have been inactive, but there are a few that have already been able to make a positive impact on the team. Wide receivers Germie Bernard and Kaden Wetjen have done their jobs, while Max Iheanachor, Daylen Everette, and Robert Spears-Jennings have all made some big plays.

Iheanachor has been a pleasant surprise ever since he was inserted into the starting lineup at right tackle, and Everette has been forced into a larger role after the Steelers decided to trade Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys and Jamel Dean went down with a sprained ankle. He has broken up some passes and shown his potential, as has Spears-Jennings. The rookie safety didn't have a ton of expectations placed on him as he was picked in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, but the coaching staff raved about him throughout the offseason program.

Spears-Jennings saw his first real playing time in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers lost the game, but Spears-Jennings played decently in relief of Rayshawn Jenkins. He was second on the defense with seven total tackles, he broke up two passes, and picked one off. He spoke to former Steeler Arthur Moats on a recent episode of The Arthur Moats Experience, where he shared something that all Pittsburgh fans should be happy to hear.

"After the [NFL] Combine, Pro Day, and visits, I was projected to go fourth round, fifth round," Spears-Jennings said. "Late fourth, early fifth. It was a stressful moment because you couldn't tell me I wasn't going fourth or fifth round. When I dropped all the way to the seventh, I was in shock and really, really pissed off, to be honest. I know what type of player I am. But luckily, Omar [Khan] called me. From there, I was like, 'I'm gonna make everybody regret it just off the disrespect. I don't take disrespect.'"

The rookie safety definitely played well enough to be considered for more playing time, and he could take the spot of Jenkins moving forward. The veteran safety seemed to be benched after allowing a big play in the first half, and Spears-Jennings played the rest of the way.

There was a ton of excitement surrounding Spears-Jennings in training camp and throughout the offseason, but most fans probably thought that just meant that he would be a solid contributor on special teams early on. That is not the case anymore. He has proven that he can have a positive impact on the defensive side of the ball, and it's looking like Pittsburgh may have gotten a steal in the seventh round.

The rookie is playing with a chip on his shoulder after falling in the draft, and it has shown whenever he is on the field.

Steelers' Robert Spears-Jennings May Not Be Needed Soon

Spears-Jennings has made a great first impression on the organization and on the fan base, and he is clearly hungry for more based off of his comments. He may have to wait for that as DeShon Elliott is scheduled to make his season debut sometime in the near future. His 21-day practice window was opened this week, and he could be on the field as early as Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. It has been reported that the goal is for him to be on the field in Week 7 in Paris, but that could just be gamesmanship from Pittsburgh.

What do you think about the rookie's comments? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
