The Pittsburgh Steelers are approaching an important stretch of their 2026 season, and General Manager Omar Khan might not be finished reshaping the roster. Pittsburgh sits at 3-2 after a 34-22 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, but that win didn't erase several concerning questions. With injuries mounting and the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline approaching, the front office has an opportunity to make another meaningful move.

Pittsburgh has already made significant changes this season, including the decision to trade cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys. Meanwhile, the offense has been forced to navigate a battered receiving corps around Aaron Rodgers. Khan has several reasons to keep his phone close over the next few weeks. The urgency is only growing with each new injury update.
Steelers insider Mark Kaboly provided an intriguing update on X on Wednesday, pointing to potential movement before the league's deadline. He didn't identify a trade partner, name a target or say a deal was imminent. His message was still hard to ignore.
"Getting strong indications that the Steelers are going to be active heading into the NFL trade deadline set for Nov. 10," Kaboly wrote.
That is a significant development for a team still trying to establish exactly what it can become under Head Coach Mike McCarthy. They cannot afford to ignore obvious weaknesses. They have a veteran quarterback, a roster built to compete and a division race that remains very much alive. If Khan sees an opportunity to improve the team without sacrificing too much of its future, the next few weeks could become interesting.
The biggest question is what being active actually means. Kaboly's report does not confirm that Pittsburgh has made an offer or even settled on a particular position. It could mean exploring multiple options, having conversations with other front offices or ultimately completing a trade. The important distinction is that Kaboly is relaying what he has been hearing, not simply offering an opinion about what the Steelers ought to do.
Steelers Have Clear Reasons To Explore The Trade Market
Wide receiver immediately stands out as a position worth watching. Michael Pittman Jr. is on injured reserve, while Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek are dealing with injuries of their own. That has placed even more responsibility on DK Metcalf and rookie Germie Bernard. Bernard impressed against Indianapolis, but Pittsburgh still lacks healthy depth.
The Steelers could lean on tight ends and practice squad elevations. Both tight ends that the Steelers have, Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth, are fully capable. However, Rodgers needs reliable WR options when defenses focus their attention on Metcalf. A veteran receiver who can contribute immediately would make sense if the asking price is reasonable. Pittsburgh cannot sacrifice its future for a temporary fix.
The secondary presents another interesting possibility. Porter is gone, Jamel Dean has dealt with an injury and DeShon Elliott's absence has complicated matters at safety. Pittsburgh has brought in additional defensive backs, but signing depth players and acquiring an established difference-maker are two very different approaches. Whether Khan believes the current group is good enough could help determine how aggressive he becomes.

The timing is interesting. Pittsburgh just defeated Indianapolis and has an opportunity to build momentum, yet the roster still looks vulnerable in important areas. Waiting until those weaknesses cost the team another game could be a mistake. The Steelers don't necessarily need a blockbuster trade, but they do need to be honest about which problems their current players can realistically solve.
Khan has already demonstrated that he isn't afraid of uncomfortable roster decisions, and the Porter trade is a recent reminder of that approach. The next move, if there is one, could tell fans even more about how the organization views its chances this season. Adding a proven contributor would suggest Pittsburgh believes it can make a meaningful push right now. Standing pat would place greater responsibility on the players already in the building.
