The Pittsburgh Steelers could be facing another offensive setback heading into their Week 6 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Star wide receiver DK Metcalf missed Friday's practice due to an illness, creating uncertainty around his availability for Sunday's game.

Pittsburgh is already short on options at wide receiver, with Michael Pittman Jr. on injured reserve and both Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek ruled out. If Metcalf cannot suit up, the Steelers will have to rely on a much less experienced group of pass catchers to help quarterback Aaron Rodgers keep the offense moving. Metcalf's status is particularly important given his role as Pittsburgh's leading receiving threat. His combination of size, speed and physicality gives the Steelers a downfield weapon who can win contested catches and force opposing defenses to account for him on every snap.
Pittsburgh's receiving depth has become a growing concern as the team prepares for Tampa Bay. Pittman's placement on injured reserve has already removed an experienced option from the lineup, while Wilson and Skowronek will also miss Sunday's contest. That leaves the Steelers with little margin for error if Metcalf is unavailable. Losing their top receiving threat would not only remove a major target for Rodgers but could also make life more difficult for the players remaining in the lineup.
Without Metcalf, opposing defenses could devote additional attention to Pittsburgh's other receivers, potentially making it harder to generate explosive plays. The Steelers would need to find alternative ways to move the ball, whether through shorter passes, increased involvement from their tight ends or a greater emphasis on the running game. Pittsburgh's challenge is not simply finding enough players to line up at receiver. It is ensuring those players can consistently create separation, make contested catches and execute the offense against a defense prepared to exploit its limitations.
Metcalf addressed the team's lack of depth earlier in the week in Teresa Varley's Week 6 blog: Trusting the Group, expressing confidence in the younger receivers who could be asked to step up if needed.
"I'm just waiting for them to suit up and show what they're going to do on Sunday," Metcalf said. "They've definitely been making plays out on the practice field since training camp, so I'm happy for them to get an opportunity to showcase what they can do."
Metcalf made these comments Thursday, before appearing on the Steelers' injury report Friday with an illness. His availability for Sunday's matchup against Tampa Bay remains a key storyline, especially with Pittsburgh already short on healthy wide receivers. If Metcalf cannot play, the younger receivers he expressed confidence in could be asked to take on even bigger roles.
Steelers May Need Their Young Receivers to Step Up Sooner Than Expected
One encouraging development for Pittsburgh has been the emergence of rookie Germie Bernard, the team's second-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. Bernard delivered his strongest performance of the season against the Indianapolis Colts, recording six receptions for 80 yards. That showing offered a glimpse of what he could provide as his role in the offense expands.
With Wilson and Skowronek unavailable, Bernard could see additional targets against Tampa Bay. If Metcalf also misses the game, the rookie may become one of Rodgers' primary options in the passing attack. However, increased responsibility brings a different level of pressure. Bernard is still adjusting to the NFL, and opposing defenses could make it more difficult for him to replicate his production if he becomes a focal point of their coverage. The Steelers will need Bernard to continue developing his chemistry with Rodgers and take advantage of the opportunities available to him.
Pittsburgh can also turn to tight ends Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington and Robert Tonyan to help absorb some of the workload. Using more two-tight-end formations could give Rodgers additional options underneath while helping the offense compensate for its limited receiver depth. The current situation also raises questions about whether the Steelers should explore additional options at wide receiver.
Jaylen Warren could once again also become a key contributor in the passing game against Tampa Bay. The veteran running back has been productive as a receiving option over the past three weeks, recording 12 receptions for 169 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown catch against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5.

Teams inevitably deal with injuries throughout a season, but losing multiple players at one position can quickly expose weaknesses in roster depth. Pittsburgh must determine whether its existing options are sufficient or whether bringing in another veteran would provide valuable insurance. Any outside addition would still need time to learn the playbook and build chemistry with Rodgers. For that reason, the Steelers cannot count on a potential signing to solve their immediate problems before Sunday's matchup.
Instead, Head Coach Mike McCarthy and his staff must prepare the available personnel to handle a difficult road game against Tampa Bay.
Metcalf's absence from practice was attributed to an illness rather than a reported new injury, meaning there is still a possibility he could recover in time to play Sunday. His availability would give Pittsburgh a much-needed boost. Even if the Steelers have to lean more heavily on Bernard and their tight ends, keeping Metcalf on the field would preserve a proven downfield threat and prevent the offense from becoming too predictable.
If he cannot play, Rodgers will have to distribute the ball among the remaining options while the coaching staff looks for ways to create favorable matchups. Pittsburgh has already shown it can overcome adversity, earning a victory over Indianapolis despite losing multiple receivers during the game. Repeating that success against Tampa Bay could be more challenging without Metcalf available.
For now, the Steelers will hope their star receiver feels better before kickoff. With the team already working through a shortage of healthy wideouts, his status could play a significant role in determining how Pittsburgh approaches Sunday's contest.
