The Pittsburgh Steelers could find themselves making a phone call to a familiar opponent as the NFL trade deadline approaches. After defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in overtime, Pittsburgh has been identified as a potential landing spot for veteran wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr. The suggestion comes at a particularly interesting time, with the Steelers dealing with significant injuries throughout their receiving corps. CBS Sports writer Carter Bahns believes a trade between the two organizations could make plenty of sense.

Pittsburgh entered the season hoping to surround quarterback Aaron Rodgers with enough offensive talent to compete for the AFC North title. However, injuries have complicated that plan and left the Steelers searching for dependable receiving options. Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson are on injured reserve, while Ben Skowronek has been dealing with a calf issue. That leaves DK Metcalf, rookie Germie Bernard, and additional depth options carrying greater responsibilities than originally anticipated.

Bahns recently identified Godwin as a potential trade target while examining Pittsburgh's increasingly difficult situation at wide receiver. The CBS Sports analyst argued that the Steelers need immediate help if they want to maximize what could be Rodgers' final NFL season. His proposal also centered on Tampa Bay's uncertain direction following its overtime loss to Pittsburgh.

"Chris Godwin Jr. should be on their radar," Bahns wrote for CBS Sports. "The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, whom they just defeated in overtime, are drifting further into the abyss and should be ready to sell. His three-year contract makes him an expensive asset who struggles to stay on the field, and that is a profile that the Buccaneers would seemingly want to part with."

That recommendation is intriguing because Godwin offers something the Steelers desperately need: an established receiver capable of contributing immediately. Pittsburgh does not necessarily need another player who requires extensive development before becoming a reliable option.

"He is healthy now, though, and that is what matters to the Steelers," Bahns said. "Plus, he should be a tremendous fit next to Metcalf. Godwin spent every year prior to this one on the other side of a towering No. 1 target in Mike Evans, so he would be right at home in the same lineup as a similarly sizable go-to weapon like Metcalf."

The organization needs someone Rodgers can trust when opposing defenses focus their attention on Metcalf. Godwin's experience and versatility could make him an appealing candidate.

Godwin has spent much of his NFL career operating alongside Mike Evans, giving him extensive experience playing opposite a physically imposing primary receiver. That background makes the potential fit with Metcalf particularly interesting. Pittsburgh could continue using Metcalf as its featured outside threat while giving Rodgers another experienced option capable of working different areas of the field. The combination could make the passing attack more difficult to defend.

However, there are legitimate complications surrounding any potential deal. Godwin's contract would represent a significant financial commitment, and his injury history creates additional risk. The Steelers would need to determine whether acquiring him would provide enough immediate value to justify the cost.

Steelers Could Give Aaron Rodgers A Major Receiving Upgrade

The biggest argument in favor of pursuing Godwin is the urgency surrounding Pittsburgh's season. Rodgers is not getting younger, and the Steelers cannot afford to waste opportunities while waiting for their injured receivers to return.

With the AFC North race remaining important to the organization's goals, improving the offense before the deadline could help Pittsburgh remain competitive. A proven receiver would provide another option in situations where the Steelers have struggled to sustain drives.

Godwin's ability to complement Metcalf is arguably more important than his name recognition. Pittsburgh already has a receiver capable of creating explosive plays, but the offense also needs dependable production when defenses take away its primary options. Godwin feels like a perfect answer for the Steelers wide receiver woes.
